It’s my favorite project of the year!! Sherwin-Williams 2022 Color of the Year!! If you’ve been following along on Instagram Stories, you know I tried to keep it simple this year with minimal(ish) wall treatments, and really let the color be the star with monotone ceiling, walls, baseboard, molding, and doors. In trying to keep things relatively simple, we ended up with a HUGE statement that I LOVE!!

Sherwin-Williams 2022 Color of the Year is Evergreen Fog SW 9130. It’s a dusty gray green that is kind of the perfect mid-tone green. It’s not dark (like the 2021 color) or light (like the 2018 color), it’s just enough that walking into a room completely covered in it feels cozy.

The magic of this color though is that it it’s a chameleon color of green meets gray with a hint of blue.

This room used to be my office, but with the completion of the second half of our reno, my office moved to the loft and this room was just sitting empty, full of supplies for Happy Happy Houseplant. Because it’s just off my entryway, it just made the whole space seem cluttery and I was excited to get things cleaned up!

This is what it looked like before everything was moved out.

This is what it looked like when I started the makeover.

LOL, big difference!

The walls previously were painted my favorite custom white and while they were bright and fresh, I am digging how sophisticated this monotone room is!

I used a matte finish to create this look. I swear by this finish and use it everywhere! Did you know that using a lower sheen like matte makes your walls seem less textured? It’s true!

The way the molding makes shadow details in the blanket of color is a dream, my favorite spot is looking at the door. Like, just look at that detail!! This was a really simple project that you can see the tutorial for here!

If you’ve been here for a while, you might remember this leather couch that I bought off Craigslist and had reupholstered. When we pulled it out of the storage unit Court said, “I didn’t know this couch was so cool!” Haha made me feel glad that I saved it for so many years!

After I started decorating it, I needed some plant life in the far-right corner. It unfortunately doesn’t get great lighting, and anything I put there wouldn’t thrive, so a wall of propagations is perfect because they don’t need/want intense lighting.

We just ripped down some 2×4’s and use a hole saw to drill holes into it for the test tubes. Previously I’ve always mixed my propagation cuttings in the same tubes, but this color + monotone style gives off a different vibe, like it needed to be organized (maybe if I painted everything in my life Evergreen Fog I would be more on top of stuff!?) so I took cuttings from almost every one of my plants and each plant has its own tube. That way when people come over, I can give them cuttings specific to their favorite plant!

If you are itching to try Evergreen Fog, it’s one of the colors that Sherwin-Williams offers as a Peel and Stick sample! No mess, no dry time, no sample pots of paint, just peel it off and stick it to your wall! And they’re reposition-able, so you can see how it looks and feels in different spots of your house at different times of the day! Peel and Stick samples are available in 75 top selling colors and 50 Emerald Designer Edition colors! You can get them here and they ship for free!

The light was a quick DIY. I had ordered supplies to make a light for this room years ago, and just hadn’t gotten around to it. When I pulled them out, I had no idea what the original design was, and made up a new configuration! It turned out so great!

So tell me, do you love it!? I think they nailed it!

Do you know what the first thing on every makeover checklist is? Paint!

It is the biggest impact/smallest investment you can make when you are overhauling a space and has the ability to absolutely transform it! Case in point, my nephew Gordon’s bedroom. With a quick trip to Sherwin-Williams for 2 gallons of paint and just a few hours, we completely changed the look of the entire room!

Here’s the before:

And here’s where we ended up just a few hours later!

I wish I could take credit for the color palette, but these wall colors are part of Sherwin-Williams new Living WellTM collection. They’ve expertly grouped some of their most calming shades into 11 different palettes to inspire you to relax and breathe more stillness into your space.

Each palette has a distinct vibe and color current. The Balance palette that I chose from embraces woodland vibes and has a lot of soft greens and warm neutrals. I used Lemongrass SW 7732 and Dover White SW 6385. I’ve been itching to do another project with a soft dusty green, ever since I used Ruskin Room Green on the bookcases in my office! I chose the Balance palette because the shades are very organic, tranquil and soft, and they paired well with the wood tones of Gordon’s furniture. I wanted to make sure his space was really calm but still had a fun pop of color.

My other favorite Living Well palette is Unplug, it’s centered around warm desert vibes and has some of the dusty desert colors that I see living in Southern Utah! If you tend to lean into cooler blues, check out Focus

Hand in hand with the Living Well palettes are two new SuperPaint® products available exclusively at Sherwin-Williams.

They took their best-selling SuperPaint (one of my faves!) and added 2 different types of technology to create two new products that not only make a room beautiful, but help bring a sense of well-being home. For Gordon’s room, I used SuperPaint with Air Purifying Technology. It’s a zero VOC formula that contributes to better indoor air quality by helping reduce the VOCs in your home from sources like carpet, cabinets and fabrics. It also helps rooms stay fresher, longer, with odor eliminating technology that breaks down unwanted household odors.*

Almost anything that is manufactured, from paint to plywood, blankets to carpet, contains VOCs. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound. It is at its most basic form, chemicals that a product off-gasses into the environment. Specifically related to paint, VOC ratings are different based on the intended use of the products (floor coating vs. wall paint vs. furniture paint). If you look at the strictest regulations it needs to come in at under 50 grams per liter (for comparison, 10 years ago most water-based paint came it at around 200 grams per liter). Less than 50 is considered Low VOC compared to 200 g/L VOC, which is fantastic.

The most concentrated amount of VOCs are released when you are working with the product, i.e., when your paint is still wet. As the product dries, the VOCs evaporate into the atmosphere. Once dried (and after your house has been aired out) the amount of VOC emissions can be greatly reduced. The huge push for Low and No VOC paint has been not so much for the safety of the product for humans (though that is an added bonus), but because of the environmental gases that it creates in the atmosphere once it’s escaped your home.

This paint was awesome to work with. It has great coverage, and knowing it has zero VOCs and actively eliminates odors makes me feel so great about using it in Gordon’s room! After crazy year that was 2020, we all deserve a space that makes us feel good and the Living Well collection helps you do just that.

The other new paint is called SuperPaint® with Sanitizing Technology. It is an EPA registered paint that kills 99.9% of certain bacteria and continues to kill up to 90% of these bacteria for up to four years.** It’s perfect for high traffic areas like hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms! Check it out for your next project!

Gordon’s room was inspired by my Grandpa of all people, he was the absolute best and where I get my DIY grit. He loved the outdoors, airplanes, and native American culture, so that was the jumping off point for the room, style-wise. This is his hat that he wore every day!

I love how the colors work together and also play off of the natural tones of the wood and décor. The space is now a really calming, tranquil environment for Gordon, while still being fun. Creating this simple color blocked wall pattern is so easy! Start by painting one of the colors (in this case we chose the lower color!).

We started by setting a simple laser line around the room about 1/3 of the way up the wall.

Here’s a tip: set your line so that you have a visual cushion around the furniture. You don’t want it to be the exact height as the dresser. In this case I found a spot that was just taller than the dresser and just shorter than the headboard!

With the laser line up, I placed painters’ tape all around the room (you can do this over the doors like I did here!)

The trick to getting a perfect paint line is to back bleed the wall color (check out this IG highlight reel to see it in action!).

With the tape up, we painted the second color on the wall and when the second coat was still slightly tacky, pulled the painters tape off. Tada! Perfect paint lines!!

Because it’s a kid’s room, I punched things up a big with pops of red and orange in the art and decor. It’s such a fun balance with the mellow neutrals on the walls!

Check out the whole Living Well collection here and pick it up at your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams store!

*The length of time SuperPaint with Air Purifying Technology actively reduces odors and formaldehyde depends on the concentration, the frequency of exposure and the amount of painted surface area.

**SuperPaint with Sanitizing Technology kills 99.9% of Staph (Staphylococcus aureus), E. coli (Escherichia coli), MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), VRE (Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis) and Enterobacter aerogenes on painted surfaces within two hours of exposure, and continues to kill 90% of bacteria for up to four years when the integrity of the surface is maintained.

Every year Sherwin-Williams predicts what will be the hottest color for the upcoming year, and I’ve been lucky enough to help them announce it for the last 6! We’ve seen everything from bright coral, to almost white, to the perfect navy blue.

This year’s color is sure to hit the moody neutral lovers in all the feels. Sherwin-Williams 2021 Color of the Year is Urbane Bronze SW 7048. It’s a dark, warm brown that has moments of gray and green, and it is FIRE! It’s deep and soothing, and just makes any space look calm and inviting.

For our project this year, we took what was going to be a series of small projects, and in true Vintage Revivals style expanded them until they took over our entire lives. Court super loves it when that happens 😂 So here are two fun ways to use the 2021 Color of the Year – one big and one small.

Big: Fluted Statement Wall Treatment

Our first project is a wall treatment that is gaining mega traction in the design space, fluting. Fluting takes a humble half round piece of molding and repeats it until it becomes this insane statement. So insane, that we used literally 5000 pin nails to do this room. Like actually. 5000 nails.

Some of you might remember that my in-laws were building their dream house the same time we were working on phase 1 of the Merc, about 3 years ago. My MIL has great style and when I asked her if we could use her house for this project she enthusiastically agreed.

Her space was super neutral, with Mandi White (my secret formula for the perfect white paint) on the walls and Tricorn Black SW 6258 on the doors. I wanted to update the dining area of the kitchen because nothing about it stood out. With all of the walls in the space being the same color and texture, you just kind of didn’t notice it.

Fluting added texture, and painting the room Urbane Bronze made it the star of the entire house.

I feel like Urbane Bronze is the perfect moody color for those that love a warmer neutral. My go to dark-but-not-black color has always been Iron Ore SW 7069, but I am feeling the winds of change. Urbane Bronze is warm enough that if you are worried about a space feeling too cool or modern sterile vibes, you can throw those out the window. It’s welcoming and statement-making, especially when you use it in a large way.

For this project, we wanted a flawless finish and opted to use our paint sprayer instead of rolling/brushing it. We used Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel in Satin (you can read my post about how life changing this paint formula is here).

One thing that can keep people from using a sprayer is the amount of prep work that can go into it, especially if you are spraying in a space that is already furnished, but believe me when I say, it is worth it. Yes, we may have spent 3+ hours masking everything off but each of the 3 coats only took 5 minutes to spray and they look perfect!! If you haven’t tried spraying paint, it’s worth it!!

You can check out the tutorial for how to flute a wall here!

Small: IKEA Hemnes Dresser Hack

Who in this world doesn’t love a good IKEA hack?! For this project we took a basic 3 drawer Hemnes dresser and updated it with a little bit of trim, new knobs, and paint!

My favorite style of cabinets are recessed doors/drawers with a small piece of trim on the outside edge. It’s what we did in the Merc, and I think it just looks so good!

I’ve got an extensive post on how to paint furniture here, this is awesome if you don’t have a sprayer and you’ll get a smooth finish with a roller! For this project though, we sprayed it, and it took no time at all!

If you’re maybe not 100% committed to painting an entire room Urbane Bronze, a dresser is more your speed.

No matter how you choose to do it, adding Urbane Bronze to your home is a MUST. Especially if you favor neutrals, black and white, and natural wood.

Make sure that if you head to your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams store, you use the coupon below! You can also use it when ordering online. And don’t forget you can get paint chips delivered for free!

They say that owning a cabin means endless projects. They are correct. Every summer we tackle something at our family cabin (last year it was a 10 day kitchen renovation) this year, our biggest priority was sealing the interior off to critters.

I have childhood trauma of seeing a mouse run across the floor at my family cabin, and we’ve seen evidence of them (you know what kind) at Court’s family cabin sporadically. But this project jumped to the top of the to-do list when we were casually hanging out on the patio and witnessed a full grown rodent run along the base of the wall and right under the door threshold.

Nope. That is not ok.

Upon further examination we were shocked to find that the threshold opens into the cabin like a big fat welcoming gate. As much as I hated thinking about mice, I was so glad that we could see where they were getting in!

I about fell out of my chair when GREAT STUFFTM  reached out about partnering on a project. I don’t know if there was ever a more serendipitous email. GREAT STUFFTM to the rescue! We took the creative liberty to update the patio space AND prevent our little unwanted guests.

GREAT STUFFTM is an insulating foam sealant, It’s an absolute necessity when it comes to any type of project that needs to be sealed. Think air leaks, pests, insulation gaps, if there is a hole, GREAT STUFFTM is your bestie. They recently launched a new Smart Dispenser that Court is level 10 excited about.

See previously, once you started using GREAT STUFFTM, you had a small window of time to complete the job before the straw sealed itself off. With their new straw design you can store and reuse GREAT STUFFTM for an actual month!! (you’ve got to watch the video at the end of this post to see Court’s thoughts on this 😂 ) When you are buying it, make sure that you get one with a silver straw and cap, then you’ll know you’re getting the right one!

Now, I wish that I could say that this project went exactly as planned, but where is the fun in that? DIY disasters are waaaaayyyyyy funner to read about.

We thought that this quick porch update would take a day or so, boy was that cute. The entire thing went sideways when my paint color was wrong, but I’m getting ahead of myself…

We started by prepping the gaps for GREAT STUFFTM by blowing them out with a leaf blower, we were dumbfounded when we put the blower against the baseboard on the inside of the house and dust and debris went flying out of the cracks in the exterior. WHYYYYY?!

After we scraped off the caulk and blew out all of the cracks we could see how truly cavernous the space was.

We taped off the sidewalk with painters tape to make sure that the foam sealant only stuck to the space underneath the threshold and in the crack to the right of the door.

Using GREAT STUFFTM is as fun as you think it will be. Just make sure you are using protective eyewear, long sleeves, and gloves.

Court said that filling the cracks was (and I quote) “The best thing I’ve done all month.” We learned that it’s better to fill the space quickly without releasing the trigger. If you release it and then start again it’s possible to blow a larger air-pocket into the gap that sometimes doesn’t get filled completely.  The more experience you have under your belt the less likely this is to happen.

After we filled the space under the threshold, we waited about 30 minutes before we filled the gap to the right of the door. Court wanted to see how much the foam had expanded, and test out the new Smart Dispenser.

No surprise that it worked like a charm!

GREAT STUFFTM needs to cure for at least 8 hours before it can be trimmed, so while we waited I started painting the door.

The plan was to use Ripe Olive (I used it in this bathroom makeover and have loved it ever since!) but as soon as I got it up on the door jamb I knew that it was all wrong. The orange tones in the wood made it look to blue and it reminded me of a phase I went through in middle school where I loved moose decor. Not a great look.

So I went back to the drawing board and brought home a color that is similar to pea green. It was actually not a bad color, the problem was that it was the same tone as the cabin. I needed variation.

Color #3 was the love child of color #1 and color #2. It was SUPER similar to the color already on the door. Which isn’t a bad color, but I wanted to change things up a little.

Color #4 wasn’t great either so I decided to try color #5…Mandi White.

I got about half way done with the door and hated it. At which point I was frustrated, exhausted, and NOT a happy camper. So we decided to head home and regroup. I picked out a new light at Home Depot, and grabbed an old end table to repurpose, as well as my trusty Tricorn Black paint. Now, you might be wondering why we didn’t just paint the door black, it seems like the obvious and awesome choice. Believe me when I say that would have been great if it wasn’t for the fact that the entire wraparound porch and stairs are all dark brown. It would have fought with the existing exterior, and while it would’ve looked good in a cropped photo, that isn’t what we’re going for.

Back at the cabin I started mixing colors and finally came up with the perfect shade of green. Darker than the previous color, and a little muddier, it was awesome. It also didn’t hurt that we power-washed the logs to clean off the red dirt and some of the crumbly orange sealer.

Have you ever seen a more beautiful door?! lol this is real life folks.

With the right color on the door (finally!) and the window trim painted Tricorn Black, I was able to turn my attention back to the GREAT STUFFTM!

We used a razor blade to slice the excess foam off (like butta). The best part about GREAT STUFFTM is that it’s paintable! I used 2 different shades of brown that matched some of the color in the stained concrete, as well as a touch of Tricorn Black to disguise the  foam, and it worked better than I could’ve ever hoped! With all of the grief that the door color was giving me, I was grateful that this part of the project was so simple!

With a few decor touches, the space is done and looks awesome!!

I’m not going to lie though, my favorite part is something not a soul will even notice, the Great Stuff that is protecting our cabin from pesky mice. Now I don’t know who Court is going to blame for the middle of the night missing cookies on.

You can find Great Stuff with the new dispenser on Amazon and at your local Lowes!

Watch the video below to see this whole project in real time, with Court commentary and everything.

This weekend I crashed my sister’s house and gave her a quick patio refresh with my friends at Article! Also, how cute is Barry Bear?!

Outdoor furniture is hard, it can get matchy matchy really quickly, which makes it look basic and uninspired. That’s why I love Article outdoor furniture so much. Everything goes, without matching and feels individual and special!!

You might remember last year, we updated the patio at the Granary and used all Article pieces. It is one of my favorite places at the Merc to hang out and entertain!

Every spring I count the minutes until Article launches their new collections, and this year they did not disappoint!! Honestly, everything that Article designs is amazing, and the quality shocks me every time. The furniture that Amy had was destroyed by the unrelenting Las Vegas sun. I’m excited to see how these articles measure up!

For Amy’s patio update, we really embraced the modern desert vibe. We went back and forth on putting in a wire trellis (similar to this one) but ultimately the 10 ft potential of the cacti, and the ease of care, won out. Can you picture how great they are going to look when they are grown in?! GAH!!

Amy and her husband are the best entertainers. They always have people over and need loads of seating. We could’ve done a sectional, but they recently paved a pathway on the side of the house, and flow-wise a sectional just didnt feel right.

I had a hard time deciding between the Sora sofa and the Callias sofa, but I just couldnt stop thinking about that woven cord on the Callais, it is everything!! I love the wide slatted arms, and little shelves. Perfect for plants, blankets, books, drinks, candy (to secretly keep it away from the kids!) The Callais comes in 2 different color variations, white with lighter wood, and taupe with darker wood. I opted for the taupe and dark wood, to balance her light colored house and give some depth to the space!

Speaking of depth, the Callais sofa is super deep, it’s just the kind of couch you want to lay back in on cool summer nights!

The whole world is obsessed with wicker, but living in the hot desert, wicker has a lifespan of my tomato plants. The sun bakes it and turns it into a crispy mess so fast. Article has come up with the perfect solution for wicker lovers, a synthetic wicker that is weather-proof.

It looks like real wicker, feels smooth like leather, and wears like the stuff black boxes on airplanes are made out of. It’s the best of everything. We have the Aeri lounger at our house and they still look brand new. At Amy’s we used the Selka lounger and it’s the perfect size chair!! Large enough to be a comfortable lounger, small enough that it can double as a generously sized dining room chair, and design forward enough that you can use it in any room in your house.

Outdoor dining is a must, especially when you live in a climate like Vegas, it’s basically like having an extra dining room 9 months of the year! The Linden teak dining set is the perfect modern picnic table. The wide slatted natural teak table gives off some serious nostalgia, while the thick round matte black legs make it modern.

One thing that I love about Article is that they give you options to mix and match. We went with the table, and just one bench (of course you can do 2!) and use individual dining chairs to make it more adult friendly.

Let’s just talk about these chairs. I dont know who at Article design headquarters is so obsessed with cording but I hope it never ever ends!! The Zina Grove Green dining chairs are SO comfortable (as you can imagine!) not to mention the perfect shade of olive green. Just a heads up, like the Svelti they are sold as a pair!

We added some of my favorite inexpensive white Home Depot planters and native plants to green everything up, and it looks so inviting!

If you would’ve told me a year ago that I would be painting a room greenish brown, with fluorescent yellow and berry purple accents, I would have run away screaming, because that has got to be the worst color combination ON THE PLANET, right!?

Well about that….maybe withhold your judgement until you see the finished space?

Cause that is exactly what I did… And I’m in love.

Inspiration can strike in the most unusual ways. The whole jumping off point for Ivie’s room makeover was a bottle of Rae vitamins at Target. There I was, doing the Target mosey, killing time before I had to talk to my kids again, and BAM! A room makeover just waiting to happen!

The Before

Ivie’s bedroom has had a tiny amount of work done since we moved into the Merc 3 years ago.

Her bathroom wall is one of the most replicated tutorials I’ve ever done, and I love the wooden dowel plant wall, but other than that, it was on a revolving door of random furniture and bedding without an intentional design.

The raw maple floors have THE BEST color and I knew they could handle something dark and ultra-moody without taking the life out of the space.

Using my inspiration, Sherwin-Williams Verde Marrón SW 9124 was the clear winner!! But could I pull it off!? GAHHHH!

Pssst! I always use Emerald® Interior in Matte on my walls! You can read why here!

As someone who professed to hate brown and beige for close to a decade, I think this color is one of the most personally risky design choices I’ve ever made. Even more than using rainbow tile in our laundry room (which I think was the gateway into this true neutral world!). But now I’m converted!

The Reveal

Are you ready to see how her room looks now!?

I am OBSESSED with it!! I am thrilled to have this new door in my heart opened 😂 This is one of my most favorite spaces I’ve ever done!!

Verde Marrón literally translates to green brown and depending on who you ask, the color is either green, or brown. I say green, Court and Ive say brown. Either way, I wanted to make sure that even though we were pushing the limits design-wise with the wall color, that the rest of the space felt cool.

Here’s why this space and color combo works:

Natural Wood:

There are a lot of natural elements that make it not feel overly painted or colorful. The rattan light, the cane headboard, the mix of wood tones—there’s something natural every place your eye goes.

Lots of black:

The black door + window (Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black SW 6258), bedding, and accents might seem counterintuitive when the space already has such a dark color on the walls, but having a heavy dose of black in the space grounds it.

Plants:

I am obsessed with the contrast of plants against the wall color. Doesnt it make the plants look so green and full of life?!

Punchy Colors in Moderation:

Ok hear me out on this one. I think that one of the reasons I’ve been so against warm neutrals like this is because they can feel boring. I NEED COLOR. So I treated Verde Marrón the same way I would treat a white wall. The accent wall with the quote (you can score a print here!) and the purple Buffalo Bill poster would be punchy on a white wall, but the deep green brown color makes them shine!!

I bought a basic desert print and paint markers and had Ive draw on the glass! Such a fun way to personalize the space! Her art inspo board had a lot of hand drawn pictures like this!

It’s no secret that Mandi White (my favorite white paint formula, get the info here) is my safe zone, and I love that it’s still in there with the wall + ceiling combo around the top of the room. This technique is an easy way to balance a bold color!

Did you know there are a lot of wrong ways to paint?! I have a super comprehensive blog post that goes hand in hand with this one that talks about 9 common painting mistakes and how to fix them here!

I am DYING to know what your thoughts are!! Would you do something like this in your space!?

3 years ago I walked into the Merc and it was finally (and officially!) ours. My heavens did we have our work cut out for us. I thought that it would be a year max before we had Phase 1 completely finished (insert maniacal laughter here).

We renovated for a year before we moved in and then, once we were here I was exhausted and the powerful, statement making spaces that I dreamed of were a little hazy. For 2 years most of the spaces we simply lived in, no design, no statements, just a blank slate waiting for creativity to get going again.

I feel like I keep saying this because I want you to know that if you are in that in between place, YOU ARE JUST FINE!! Be patient with yourself and the inspiration will come!

Finally I have a reveal to share, and I am over the moon in love with how our laundry/mud room worked out!

The Renovation

This is the floor plan for the Merc, the highlighted area is the laundry space!

For fun, let’s remember what this space looked like when we bought it.

Be prepared, it’s unrecognizable!! The door in the bathroom was converted to the main laundry window.

And you can see the light shining through the door in the back right corner. Crazy right!? This area was actually split in 1/2 and the left half was turned into Ivie’s bathroom, while the right half created the laundry/mudroom!

This

Demo and Framing

This was the first space that we demoed. There were 2 bathrooms that we removed and after 9 months of dreaming about ripping out the walls it was THE BEST FEELING!

The framer came and closed off the doorway, and built the new walls (can you see it coming together!?)

Oh and just for fun, this is what the outside looked like until the Andersen window was installed and the stucco was repaired! Learn all about our windows here!

The far right wall was one of the Merc Perks that we had to maneuver around. This whole area was an addition (maybe #4 or #5?) and was built out of concrete block. We had to work with the existing doorways and came up with a sort of zig zag hallway. While we were working on the plans I was super nervous about it feeling like a maze, but it’s great and not weird at all!

We were able to raise the doorway a little (you can see the steel beam at the top of it, the wood header was also moved up!) The light on the left side of the picture is coming through the window.

Can you see the space on the floor where they had to remove the concrete and run new pipes?

Drywall was magical!

Now It’s Time for Design

The cabinets were custom built by my friend Shawn at Aspen Mill. I wanted to do something special that had a nod to the age of the building and came up with the idea of a faux map cabinet/laundry sorter. It is one of my favorite parts of the Merc! You can see what the sorter looked like before the face was installed, there are 3 separate compartments and it pulls out like a giant drawer.

Lighting Tip:

I was SO excited for the lights. If you have it in the budget, a great way to make a statement with lighting is to install pendant lights where you would naturally put can lights. This space is long and narrow and recessed lighting was the obvious choice but instead I went with these modern pendant lights from Triple Seven Home.

And this is kind of where it stayed for the better part of 2 years! (Pssst. dont be mad but I photoshopped out the exposed water shut off valve in the picture below.)

A blank slate that was fine and live-able, but not special. Ya know? Like, it’s good, but it’s not iconic.

Also, it had become COMPLETELY overrun with plants and I needed a better system for keeping the back of the house plants happy! I dont have a great shot of them, but picture this times 42.

Rainbow Tile

Fast forward to 2020. I came across the most incredible tile. I was looking for a great pattern (which Lili has a ton of!) But found these rainbow baguette tiles in the most perfect colors I couldnt even handle it.

Instantly my creativity was sparked and using this tile in the laundry room was all I thought about!

Can I Actually Do This!?

I’m not going to lie, it’s a big statement and I got the pit sweats on a few occasions and almost talked myself out of it. But I had a long come to Jesus about it and remembered why I wanted the Merc in the first place, to be different! And white tile, white cabinets, black windows, and plants were not going to get me the “I cant believe I get to live here” feeling that makes the Merc so special. So rainbow tile it was!

You guys came in clutch helping me sort through all of the options and I settled on a campy earthy modern rainbow pattern that is EXACTLY the vibe I wanted.

As it so happens to go with projects, there were some slight bumps in the road. You’d think after 10 years I’d have it figured out, but nope, failure FOREVER!!!

Because of the unpredictable mix of tile colors in the boxes I not only had no idea what to expect, but there were some colors that I only had a handful of. This lead me to come up with a plan to add a 4th row of tile to half of the wall and an upper cabinet on the other half.

Aannndddd Failure.

Granted I was still going to put a shelf along the top of the tile and inside the cabinet box, but I knew right away that this was NOT the right direction.

That’s one good thing about failing so often is that I know in my gut if it’s a good idea and bad execution or if it’s just a bad idea. This was the later.

So off the cabinet came, and off the 4th row of tile came, and back to the drawing board.

I needed something grittier. The oak cabinet was too middle of the road, in terms of color and design. The shelf needed to be dark, but not polished painted black like the door and window. It also needed to be lightweight visually. The tile is screaming for attention and the shelf needs to not compete at all.

I called my friend Lee from Artisan Metal Design to see if he could weld a simple suspended shelf for me. Basically this table, flipped upside down and attached to the ceiling. He of course delivered and it looks incredible! Want to see?!

The arched magnetic wood memo board is such a perfect way to balance the design of the space and of course, bring in more plants!

How is that for a before and after!?

Thanks for following along with our renovation friend, it means the world to us!!

If you are new to the Merc series, you can relive it from the beginning here!

I am over the moon to share with you this year’s Sherwin-Williams Save Me room makeover! If you’re new to the game, let me bring you up to speed! Every year I partner with the best paint company in all the land and overhaul a lucky winner’s space. Last year we tackled Amy’s Living Room, and this year we are at the Cliffords, turning a bedroom-that started out as an office- back into an office/playroom!

Office with half painted green and white wall, peg shelf and black modern chandelier

Let me tell you a little bit about this awesome family and what we did at their house. A couple of years ago their oldest son was diagnosed with a brain tumor, in response to his need, they had to close off the room just off their entryway and turn it into a bedroom. Closing off this room made the entryway dark and blocked the mountain view that they had. When Mo died in June, one of the most important things to his mom was that this room was opened back up to let the light back into the house. She wanted the room to be a place for her other boys to be able to hang out and play legos and do art projects. I think this is the scenario that a lot of young parents find themselves in, functional play space that invites creativity, but can also be presentable as an adult room. Ya feel me?

The first thing that we did was demo the wall. Man, what a difference it made! Once the space was opened back up, and the new doorway was closed off again it was ready for the overhaul of a lifetime!

Doesn’t the dark green interior make all the difference in the world!? The space is colorful without being too loud and has plenty of natural elements to ground it. It’s the perfect mix of playful and approachable. And honestly, the combo of the green walls, yellow chairs from Article and raw wood is just so good!!

This room has massive ceilings and we took advantage of every square inch of it with our floor to ceiling IKEA bookcase hack. I am obsessed with the ROYGBIV books (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). To keep it extra playful we added some of the boys favorite lego builds into the mix!

My favorite part of the space though is the paint treatment. Want to know how to replicate it??! Oh good! I used a combo of the GREATEST white in the world, my secret formula Mandi White and Jasper SW 6216.

We started by painting the whole space in Emerald Interior Matte. I LOVE Sherwin-Williams Matte sheen, especially when you want to disguise wall texture as much as possible. (Which we did because the walls have their original heavy texture, texture from when the room was closed off, and now texture from when we opened it back up.) The lower the sheen in a paint finish, the less light it reflects, and the less texture shows. It’s actually kind of magical!

The next step is to set up a laser level to mark the entire room for the accent color. I wanted everything, closet door included, to have this color on it. A laser level is a must for a project like this, floors and ceilings are rarely level and so measuring up from the floor or down from the ceiling might not give you a level line around the room.

Following the laser level mark, I taped off the line with painters’ tape (if you are taping over a freshly painted area I highly recommend using Delicate tape so you don’t pull the new paint off the wall when you remove it!)

Getting a perfectly straight line is very easy, it just requires one small step that will make all the difference in the world. Regardless of the brand or type of tape you are using, if you are painting on a textured surface, you’ve got to follow this simple hack.

Once your tape is up, use a brush to paint the main wall color (in our case Mandi White) along the tape line. This will seal the edge and fill any negative space that the tape couldn’t reach inside the wall texture. Essentially, it’s bleeding the paint, you’re just doing it intentionally, so the bleed is camouflaged with the Mandi White wall color. Cool right?!

After this is dry, it’s time to paint the accent color! A tip when you are painting: make sure the paint is freshly shaken. The longer paint sits, the more it separates.

Remove your painters’ tape while the paint is still tacky if you can. Slowly peel it back holding it at a 45-degree angle and watch your perfect paint line reveal itself. Oh, and when you’re done, wipe the puddle of drool off of the floor so that you don’t slip.

After I had gotten to this point, my gut told me that we needed to do something more exciting on the wall. I’ve been dying to do a giant single circle pattern forever and this was the perfect opportunity.

How to Paint A Giant Circle on a Wall

Start by finding the center of your circle.

For me this was the center of the wall, but you don’t have to do that, you can totally create a circle that is off centered or overlaps onto an adjoining wall!

Draw the circle

This part is super easy, and as my 10-year-old would say, “so satisfying.” Tie a pencil to a string that has zero stretch (the zero stretch is very important for a perfect circle!). Tack it to the wall in the center of where your circle will be. Extend the string and hold the pencil at a 90-degree angle from the wall. Keeping the string tight draw your circle!

Painting the circle

Cutting in (aka painting with a brush) is the best way to paint your circle, or at least to paint along the edges of it. Go nice and slow and follow the pencil line!

I love the simple color shift of the halves of our circle. The green that I used is Secret Garden SW 6181 and Grecian Ivory SW 7541. You could do this with any combo of colors, and it will be impactful regardless of what you choose!

I would love to give a huge virtual hug to Sherwin-Williams for giving me the chance to brighten this family’s home! Ok I’m going to sign off before I start to cry. Tutorial for the desk, shelves, and bookcases are comin’ atcha!

Over the summer Court and I had the opportunity of a lifetime when Real Simple magazine asked us to overhaul the Master Suite in their 2019 Real Simple Home. The house is in Brooklyn and absolutely AMAZING. I was also so honored that they asked us to do it! I mean, we’re far from what you would consider interior design professionals. Funny story actually, they asked for a mood board of the room to make sure that the vibe jived with the other rooms in the house. I DIDNT EVEN KNOW HOW TO DO A MOOD BOARD. This actually happened. Luckily we got something sort of figured out and they left a lot of trust in my hands. But guys if this goes to show anything it’s that passion and your heart can take you to places you’ve never dreamed of.

We really identify ourselves as DIYers. You guys know that we loooove a good project. So as I was figuring out what type of DIY we could pull off for this space I knew that there were some restrictions that we had to work around. Because it was on the other side of the country, and because we had a jam packed summer travel schedule, we needed something that could be installed quickly. We couldnt spend days and days working on it in NYC. There was also the huge logistical situation of not having our tools/space to build the way that we do at home. It also (and most importantly) needed to be FREAKING AWESOME. I have been obsessed with caning since we used it on the bench for our entryway and knew that it needed to happen in this space. Thus the most beautiful cane wall on the planet was born. Tutorial is on it’s way, but until then, check out this quick overview video on Real Simple.

Home Depot was the sponsor for the room, which meant that all furniture and accessories are straight from my favorite orange store. Yes, the chandelier. Yes, the bed. Yes, the accent chair. Yes, the rug. ALL OF IT!! If my years of incessant Home Depot love hasn’t turned your heart yet, maybe this space will! All of the pieces are linked below!

My favorite piece in the room is the bed. Oh my gosh, it has the best art deco design don’t you think? I am digging so hard on the arches and the black and brass two tone finish.

If you’ve been around Vintage Revivals for any length of time you know that I usually dont paint an entire room a color. I love white (specifically my secret formula Mandi White) with my whole heart. But with this space I pushed myself out of my comfort zone a little and painted all of the walls Rosemary. If you are on the hunt for a good mid-tone green this one gets my stamp of approval!

This was such a fun project to work on and challenging in all of the best ways! I hope you guys had fun following along and getting a peek behind the curtain! If you want to relive the whole process, check out the RS House highlight reel on Instagram!

Did you guys have the best time following along with our Little Merc modern playhouse make-it-up-as-we-go build on Instagram the last 2 weeks?! It was so fun to share the process and excitement with you!!

I know why you’re here. You’re itching to see the Sherwin-Williams 2020 Color of the Year right!?!

I’ve been teasing you with black and white photos like this:

Buuuuut are you ready for it!?

The Sherwin-Williams 2020 Color of the Year is Naval SW 6244

I LOVE Naval and have used it before, remember my sister-in-law’s bedroom makeover? It’s such a good deep true navy!!

One thing that Sherwin-Williams is doing differently this year is that they are celebrating not just a color, but an experience. When they told me that the color was Naval I was on board, but when they told me that the they wanted things to be centered around this feeling of being connected to the night sky I was not only on board, but I had made myself president and already passed out cookies.

I knew INSTANTLY that I wanted to do a playhouse with a skylight so that my kiddies could enjoy the stars and have their own special piece of the universe.

We’ve done a lot of projects, but we’ve never done something like this that involved framing and building such a large structure. I’ve had a lot of people request build plans, but we literally made it up as we went SO if anyone wants to take on the task of helping us put plans together shoot over an email!

The other colors that I used are Mandi White (the best white in all the land, get the secret formula here!!) and Tricorn Black SW 6258. I really love the pairing of Naval and Tricorn Black – it makes it feel modern and bold even though individually they are pretty safe colors. Everything was painted using Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior paint, and for the trim we used Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.

You guys know that Court is up for anything, but when it comes to the Boy and his stuff- he get’s super opinionated. So while I wanted everything designed, he wanted it to be everything a kid could hope for. Let’s go inside the Little Merc and I’ll show you!

Do you not just want to climb up there and spend the day watching the sky?! For the ladder we used basic in stock fence posts and put wooden dowels in them!

Is it not just the most magical space you’ve ever seen?! It makes me emotional just looking at these pictures because I know how much Bremmer boy loves it!

We’ve still got a ton of work to do with the yard, but it’s coming together!! Check out all of the sources here!

Huge thanks to Sherwin-Williams for inspiring us to create this magical place! If you use Naval in your space PLEASE shoot me a message! I would love to see it!!

Love your guts,
m
