I am absolutely in love with this DIY Geometric Wreath. It’s a tutorial that I pull out every time the holidays come around because it works with any style of decor! You can hang this wreath on your wall or on your front door. It is a quick and fun project that you can do in under an hour!

DIY Geometric Wreath Tutorial

You know when you are so inspired by something it is all you can think about!? I want to Himmeli everything.

What is Himmeli?

Lets back up. You are probably saying “Himmeli?” Lets. discuss. Himmeli is a traditional Scandinavian art. They typically make them at Christmas time and they are the most gorgeous mobiles that you have ever seen (Google it!!)

The wreath and how to make something similar lived in my every thought for days. After trying my hand at making simple Himmeli ornaments, I felt like I understood the design process a lot better. Looking at a 3 dimensional object 2 dimensionally is enough to give you an aneurism. After trying a few techniques I feel like I came up with an extremely easy technique to make a geometric wreath.

(And when I say easy, I mean my 10 year old can do it. So you can totally do it too!)

Tutorials for this type of project are notoriously confusing and make you want to give up on life completely. I am doing everything I can to combat that problem. Please don’t give up on life.

How To Video

I even made a video because, lets face it, sometimes it is just easier to learn things in person.

But of course I had to do a regular tutorial too. So lets get to it!

Himmeli Wreath Supply List

You can also purchase a brass wreath kit from the Vintage Revivals shop!

Start by cutting your straws down to right length. To make a wreath that is 19 inches at its widest point I cut the straws to 4 1/2 inches.

The fastest and most efficient way to cut 105 straws is to use a rotary cutter and a guide.

Geometric Wreath Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-27

Before you get started I have a few tips:

  • When you are connecting the wire you will only need to wrap it once (unless you are finishing a line, then you will want to wrap it a couple more times.)
  • Tuck in as many of the tails as you can (I talk about this a little bit more in the video)
  • Handle this like it is a newborn baby flower. VERY carefully. Straw is not the strongest material on the planet.

Now is the fun part.

Making your wreath sections

Step 1: Measure out 2 1/2 arms length of wire.

How To Make a Geometric Straw Wreath Step 1

Step 2: Thread 4 straws on the wire

Geometric Himmeli Wreath Tutorial Step 2

Step 3: Twist the wire together to form a diamond with the straws

Geometric Wreath Tutorial Step 3

Step 4: Add 2 more straws to the wire

DIY Wreath Step 4

Step 5: Twist and attach the wire at the opposite end of the diamond

How To Make Himmeli

Step 6: Continue adding 2 straws and twisting them until you have a shape with 5 sections.

Himmeli Wreath Step 6

Step 7: Feed the wire back through one of the straw sections so that it is coming out of the elbow

How To Make a Geometric Wreath Step 7

Step 8: Add one section of straw to the wire

Geometric Himmeli Wreath Tutorial Step 8

Step 9: Connect the wire to the elbow of the next section

Geometric Himmeli Pentagon Step 9

Step 10: Repeat until 4 or the 5 sections are connected and you have a shape similar to Pacman

Geometric Wreath DIY Step 10

You are done with your first piece!! Now you just need to make 7 of these PacMan/Pentagon shapes. After you have done that,  this is where you pick up the tutorial.

Step 11: Connect the open space to the side of the next space by threading the wire through the straw in the second piece.

Wire Wreath Tutorial Step 11

DIY Geometric Wreath

Step 12: Secure the wire to the corner of the first piece.

How To Make A Himmeli Wreath

Step 13: Connect all 7 shapes together to make a circle.

DIY Wreath Step 12

Step 14: Add 2 Arms Length (approx. 10 feet) of wire to the center point on the face of one pentagon. Thread a piece of straw on the wire and connect it to the center of the next pentagon.

Geometric Wreath How To Step 13

Step 15: Connect all the center points together

Openwork Wreath Tutorial

Clip your wires and you are done!

One little tip, if you are planning on spray painting your wreath string a small piece of wire from one of the outer points so you have something to hold while you are painting! (I used this gold to paint mine!)

Just an FYI the center wreath in this picture is a different design. The 2 wreaths on the outsides are from this tutorial. You can find the tutorial for the middle one here!

You guys!! Today I am back with another hanging geometric himmeli planter! (The tutorial for the first one is here!)  Can you just picture how awesome they will be together?! Phew.

This planter is so simple to make, I pinky promise you can do it!

geometric_hanging_brass_planter

To make this planter you will need:

Brass Tubing (found here)
Pipe Cutter (can be found at Home Depot)
30 Gauge Floral Wire (can be found at Joann’s)
Leather Cord
Small Bowl
Glue Gun

Start by cutting your pipe (this is a little boring so spice things up with some Tim Riggins or something mmmkay?)

You will need:

(3) at 12”
(6) at 6”
(9) at 2”

Geometric Planter Supply List

Start by measuring 2 arms length of wire. Thread 3 of the 6” pieces onto it.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-2

Connect the 2 ends of the wire by twisting them together.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-3

Thread 2 more pieces of pipe onto the wire. Tuck in the little tail from your first triangle, it makes things nice and neat!

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-4

Connect them to one of the triangle elbows (doesn’t matter which one and this point!)  Twist your wire and thread it through the next piece so that it comes out on the tip of your shape.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-6

Add 1 more piece and connect it with the tip on the opposite side.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-7

This will make a 3D triangle.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-8

Now take (2) 12” pieces and thread them onto your wire.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-12

Connect them to one of the triangle corners.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-13

Thread your wire through the pipe to the last corner of the triangle.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter 1 vintagerevivals

Add your last 12” piece, and join the wire at the top.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-16

Now to make the little hanging guy on the bottom.

Take an arm’s length of wire and thread 4 pieces of 2” tubing onto it.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-18

Twist the wire at the ends of the pipe together to make a square.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-19

Add 2 pieces of tube onto your wire (make sure to tuck the tail in!)

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-17

Connect it at the opposite end.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-20

Thread your wire through ONE of the pieces so that it is coming out at one of the disconnected elbows

Add one piece of pipe

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter Tutorial vintagerevivals

Connect the tube to the next corner (horizontally!) and repeat for the other 2 pieces.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-22

Feed the wire back through one piece so that it is coming out of the top and attach it to the bottom triangle point of the large planter piece.

Hanging your leather cording is really simple!

Measure the length that you want and feed one end through the top of the planter.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-23

Fold it over and hot glue the end.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-25

Using a second piece of leather, hot glue the tip underneath the fold that you just made.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-26

Wrap it around the longer piece nice and even.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-27

When you have wrapped it the desired length, trim your leather and hot glue the end down.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-28

Tada! You are amazing! Give yourself a giant high five friend!! Plant your favorite succulent or fern inside the bowl and it just rests inside the triangle!

You guys are in for a treat today. I am pretty sure that I have had 4 people guest post on Vintage Revivals in its entire existence. What can I say. I am a control freak. Sometimes there are just people that you meet that you instantly love everything about that make you want to shout from the rooftops. Jeran from Oleander and Palm is that girl for me. Jeran I love you and I dont care who knows it!! She has got FANTASTIC taste and is one of the sweetest people I have ever had the chance to meet. So without further adieu,  meet Jeran!

I’m so honored to be here on VR. How cool is this? Let’s start with, I’m a huge fan, because I am. Every time Mandi puts something together, I’m blown away. She knocks it out of the park every stink’n time. You know what I’m talking about, that’s why you are here. You too love her “out of the box”, thrifty thinking mind. This Christmas when I saw the Geometric Wreath tutorial, I ran (well drove really quickly) to Walmart to stock up on straws and wire. I had to have this wreath in my life. And it is, it’s in my living room, and it makes me happy every time I walk by it. Around Valentine’s Day I started playing around with trying to make a heart version. I tagged Mandi in my picture and she commented back right away. After making many, many versions, I think this is the best and easiest one to make. Anyways, to make a long story short, I’m helping to share how make a Himmeli style heart for your home. It’s soooo perfect in Macie’s Boho room.

heart pic 4

So, there are lots of steps, but its really simpler to make then you think.

heart 1

1. You are going to start with good old cocktail straws and a piece of wire (20 gauge) about 2 yard long. 12 of the straws you will cut in half and the others you will leave whole (except for one little guy).

2. Start by threading 3 small straws onto the end of the wire and twists the ends tight together to make a triangle.

3. Add 2 more small straws, make sure to pull them over the twisted ends of the wire.

4. Take those 2 straws that were just added and bend them into another triangle attached to the first triangle. Twist the end of the wire to hold the triangle shape

5. Thread the wire back through the last straw added.

heart 2

6. Add another small straw to the tip of this triangle.

7. Use this last straw added to form a pyramid shape. Be sure to twist the end of the wire at the end of the join to hold the shape.

8. Add 2 more small straws to the tip of this pyramid shape.

9. Bend these 2 straws to make another triangle coming off of the pyramid.

10. Thread the wire back through the last straw added.

11. Add another small straw and attach it to form to back and back pyramid shapes.

12. Now add another 2 small straws and bend them to make another triangle shape.

heart 3

13. Ok, stay with me…. thread the wire back through the last straw added so that it comes out at the point of the newly formed triangle. Now add one more small straw and close the shape to make structure that looks like 3 pyramid joined together. You are 1/2 way there!

14. Repeat steps 1-13 and make another tri-pyramid shape just like the first one. (Don’t hate me, you’re going to love this geometric heart when it’s done.)

15. Now the fun begins, your little heart is going to start to take shape. Woohoo, get excited! Ok, now place the two shapes side by side with the wire ends on the bottom, against the work surface, join the two shapes together with a small straw piece. From center back of one to the center back of the other.

16. Now you are going to need 6 full length straw and one the has about 1 cm (it’s my Canadian coming out, just less then 1/2″)  trimmed off.

17. Add 2 long straws to the wire.

18. Bend them to make a point for the bottom of the heart. Twist the wire in place to hold this shape.

heart 4

19. Now, this might not happen to you, but I ran out of wire length. It’s an easy problem to fix, just twist another length of wire the the end and you are good to go. The join will be hidden inside the straws.

20. Thread the wire back through the last straw added so that the wire come out at the tip of the bottom of the heart.

21. Add another long straw and join it to the center of the first heart hump (yes, that is a technical term).

22. Now thread the wire through the short straw at right beside it so that it comes out at the center of the heart (right in the middle of the 2 heart humps).

23. Add the straw that is just slightly smaller to this center spot. Twist the end of the wire around the bottom tips of the other straws and then add another long straw and attach it to the top of the heart again. It’s a lot of up and down here, you can see it taking shape though.

24. Thread your wire through the small straw again so that you can add another long straw and attach it to the bottom point of the heart.

heart 5

25. And FINALLY you can add the final long straw and attach it to the back of the heart! Yay, you did it! Trim your wires and pat yourself on the back. I’m so proud of you.

I painted one of mine copper (because copper anything is awesome). You can of course make your heart bigger or smaller, just follow the proportions and make the smaller straws half the size of the longer ones. Happy himmeli heart making!

How to make a Modern Geometric Himmeli Wreath vintagerevivals

This design is a little more complicated than the first geometric himmeli wreath, and as I was shooting the pictures, there was just so much in the pictures, it was pretty confusing. So I decided to only do this tutorial in video form (this is totally new for me!)

I also feel like I need to preface it by saying that the end is a little dark (it is so much easier to shoot during the summer, when it stays light until 9:00!)

Let me know if you have any questions, and make sure that if you recreate this or any other Vintage Revivals project that you hashtag it on Instagram with #myvintagerevivals so that I can see it (and possibly feature it!)

When I decided to DIY all my Christmas decorations this year I knew I wanted to kick things off with Himmeli. I have seen mobiles and plant holders around the internets but lets be honest,  they look really intimidating. Unless you are gifted in the knowledge of the spacial sort, it is a headache waiting to happen.

Luckily for you I have passed all 3 Professor Layton games on the Nintendo DS, so I am sort of an expert at this sort of thing.

One of the biggest problems that I was having was the simple fact that I had no clue what it was called. Skinny geometric tubey hangy things? I never would have guessed the name of this type of art.

That is until someone pinned a gorgeous pendant chandelier that was titled Himmeli Inspired Light. And I was all “What is Heeemelllleeeee?” So I googled it.

And then my life changed forever.

And here we are today.

DIY Geometric Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals

Traditionally Himmeli is made with straw (like the kind that grows out of the ground) and string. Since straw is not readily available I settled for the next closest thing,  cocktail straws. I tried to use string but because I was working with longer lengths of straw the needle was just too short (even the really long ones I bought.)  So I switched things up and used 30 gauge floral wire.

To make a basic himmeli polyhedron is simple.

All you need is a package of straws, floral wire, and scissors. I found black cocktail straws at Target and white ones at my local grocery store.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com

You will need 12 pieces of straw that are equal in length.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-2

Start by cutting a length of wire that is about 15 times longer than your straw length. So if your straws are 4 inches you will want a piece of wire that is about 60”. It is better to have too much than not enough,  sort of like money. Can I get an amen?

Take 3 pieces of straw and string them on your wire.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-3

Connect the wire at the end of the straws together to make a triangle.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-4

String on 2 more pieces of straw.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-7

Connect it to make another triangle.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-5

How To Make Geometric Ornaments

Do this until you have 5 triangles all in a row.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-12

String one last piece of straw on.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-13

Connect your wire to the beginning piece (you will probably still have a little bit of a tail!)

Step by Step Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals

Feed your wire through the side of one of the loose triangles

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-15

Use it to connect the tops of both triangle flaps.

Geometric Himmeli Ornament Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-16

TA DAAAAA! You did it!! It was so easy right?! This is the fun part where you can add to your design.
