Hellloooo!! Ok so, I feel like it is so easy to get in a rut when it comes to things that maybe aren’t conventionally DIYed. Do you know what I mean? When I was working on the Laundry Room Makeover I found myself searching for a really fantastic towel rack that I could mount on the underside of the cabinet. Let me tell you, I found a few good ones…the problem was that they were SO expensive. Ugh, why?!!

Per the usual, I decided to take matters into my own hands and pulled out my trusty staples, leather and copper. I think they are critical to a DIY MacGyver’s arsenal. You can make anything!

DIY Copper and Leather Hanging Clothing Rack Tutorial  Vintage Revivals

To make this project you’ll need:

Leather Scraps
(1) 24” piece of 3/4” copper pipe
(2) 3/4” copper caps
Grommet Kit
Screws

Trust me when I tell you, you‘ll want to get your grommet kit at Home Depot. Their prices are significantly lower than the kits that you can buy at the craft store.

Start by cutting your leather into 2” strips. The length will depend on how low you want it to hang, mine were 10” long.

DIY Copper and Leather Clothing Rack-1

DIY Copper and Leather Clothing Rack-2

Fold the leather in 1/2. Using your grommet setter (or if you want to technically correct tool you can use a leather punch) punch a hole in the leather 1/2” down from the ends.

DIY Copper and Leather Clothing Rack-4

Set a grommet in each side.

Next, fold your leather in 1/2 again and punch a hole 1 1/2” from the fold.

DIY Copper and Leather Clothing Rack-6

When it’s unfolded it will look like this.

DIY Copper and Leather Clothing Rack-7

Fold it back up and set 1 grommet through both holes to hold the leather together.

DIY Copper and Leather Clothing Rack-8

So easy right!?

To mount them I put screws through the grommets into the cabinet. **When you’re doing this, make sure that your screws aren’t too long or they’ll poke through! My cabinet is made from 3/4” MDF so I used 3/4” screws (because of the space the grommet creates.

DIY Copper and Leather Clothing Rack-9

To be completely honest I wasn’t sure how much weight this would actually hold (I was fully prepared to take it down if I had to) but it can hold a whole dryer full of my clothes no problem! Hooray for projects that are pretty AND functional!!

Its PLANT WEEK!!!!!!!! Do you even know how exciting this is?!? Its like Shark Week but WAYYYYY better and with a lot less fear (mostly). Every day this week I have got an amazing project for you that will make the love in your plant-lovin heart swell to massive proportions.

You.GUYS!! I hope you are enjoying this fun weeklong series as much as I am. It was just the kick start that I needed to get back into project life.

I am not exaggerating when I tell you that today’s project is one of my most favorite EVER. Ever ever.

DIY Leather and Wood Indoor Plant Trellis Wall Tutorial

About 6 months ago I pinned this awesome picture because hello I want to move in there yesterday. For months I have been itching to recreate this modern trellis project in my home, and hooray! for finally getting around to it!

612f393a2915fbcdd96ddc36887f7a25

This wall in my kitchen eating nook was the perfect spot. There is a ton of light and you know how plants love that. And the ceilings are sooo tall (10 ft) that it is a major statement. A statement that says “I Hoard Plants”. So in an effort to get all of the little guys evicted out of their current residence (i.e. the kitchen table) this wall became their new home.

Also this was majorly one of those make it up as you go projects, so if you are going to recreate it make sure that you read all the words, and not just skim the pictures. Cause without the words the pictures are a leeeeeeetle confusing. 🙂

Trellis Wall

Every one’s wall dimensions will be different but the basic premise is the same. Start by taking the width of your wall and divide it in 3rds. This will give you 2 points to work off of.

I started by cutting a few different angles on my miter saw (because I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted it to look like and what angle would achieve that) a 60 degree angle ended up being just right.

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall-5

To be completely transparent, when I was doing this project there was a lot of temporarily putting boards up to make sure that they were going to work and double measuring before I made the cuts.

There were a handful of long boards that extended the width of several diamonds. I didn’t really have a rhyme or reason for which ones went where, it was just where they made the most sense.

Once the 120 degree base angle boards were up, all I did was fill it in with boards that were cut to 15” and had a 60 degree parallel angles on both ends.

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall Measurements

You know how sometimes I have those “I can teach it to you but I cant understand it for you” tutorials? This is one.

*One thing to note, when you are working on a miter saw, 90 degrees is 0, you subtract your angle from that. So to cut a 30 degree angle, I needed to set my saw blade at 60 degrees. Because 30 + 60 is 90. (The reason most people overlook this is because the most common angle is 45 and that is exactly 1/2 of 90, so you set your blade at 45.)

To cut the starting boards set your saw at 60 degrees. (2) 60 degree cuts joined together will make 120 degrees. The 15” boards with the parallel angles get a 60 degree angle at the end of each board, which means your blade will be set at the 30 degree mark on the saw.

Angles copy

To finish off an outside corner, take the measurement of your board (15”) and add the width (2”) so you’ll cut the outside corner boards to 17”. Or you can do what I did and use long boards to start/end the outside corner boards.

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall-8

Once everything was in place with tap/temporary nails, I went back through and secured it with finishing nails. Make sure that you are hitting studs when you are finishing everything up so that it can hold the weight of your planters!

The original plan was to use cup hooks and these little egg shaped hanging planters that I found on Amazon (you can see it in the bottom left of the picture below)

Screen Shot 2015-07-15 at 10.44.43 AM

But they looked so…

dinky.

So I scrapped the idea and decided to come up with a way to hold regular sized containers instead.

I scored all of the planters on clearance at Target and gave them a coat of Rust-Oleum Flat White 2X spray paint.

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall-16

The leather that I used was left over from my couch reupholstery and if you know me at all you know that I LOVE leather. Like its probably a problem but I’m just so happy about it I don’t even care.

The most important thing is to make sure that you leather will fit snuggly around your planter on all sides with the edges overlapping 1/2”. The main strap measures 14”x2” and 2 cross straps measure 10”x1/2” each. To get the right measurement for the bottom straps all you have to do is drape a piece on an upside down planter and make sure it’s hitting just above the rim.

Trellis Wall-3

Fold your main strap in 1/2 (hotdog style) and using a leather punch you are going to punch 6 evenly spaced holes through both sides. I folded mine because I didn’t want it to stretch. If you have thick leather you most likely wont need to fold.

Take the 1/2” pieces and find the center point on each and punch a hole there as well as on each end.

Using a grommet setter (get them at Home Depot they are so much cheaper than craft stores!) you are going to attach everything together, starting with the center holes on the 1/2” straps.

Next put one end of the 1/2” pieces inside the main folded piece and line up the hole. Attach all 4 ends just like that.

Leather Holder

Set the grommets in the 2 reaming holes and you are done! (and left with what appears to be a leather jockstrap. You’re welcome.)

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall-9

Fold the edges over and line up the holes, this is where you are going to attach it to the wall. Place a screw inside the grommets.

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall-10

Drill it onto the center the diamond points (make sure the sides are straight and not droopy!)

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall-12

Yay! It’s not a jockstrap anymore!

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall-14

They’ll hang a little, but you don’t want it to droop too much.

Indoor Plant Trellis Wall-15

Fill it with your favorite plants (see more about how to do that here!)

Oh man! We’re halfway through the #cricuteverywhere week of inspiration (and PRIZES!) I cant believe it!

A few weeks ago took a little trip up to Salt Lake to film some fun video with Cricut for this campaign. You guys. I wish you could have been there. It was SUCH a blast hanging out with everyone and learning how these types of videos come together. Especially getting the product shots. That was (surprisingly) way harder than the interview part. They asked me about everything under the sun (and yes, I may have cried.) but we’ll get to that in a second.

2 things, 1. if you don’t love leather I don’t know if we can still be friends, and 2. You deserve a cute luggage tag.

diy_leather_luggage_tag

These are SIMPLE. Because it is a Make It Now project, everything is perfectly sized and ready to roll. All you have to do is plug in your info (unless your name is Margo Phillips and your phone # is (123)456-7890 then today is your lucky day!)  Ps. When I was working on this project, I asked Janae for a cute name. Margo was her suggestion, so there you go!

You’ll Need:

Cricut Explore Air
Leather that measures at least 6”x6”
Leather string
Midnight Pen
Hot glue gun or fabric glue

Once you have your name and other info on the design, select Weld and load your mat. It’s show time.

The luggage tag is double sided, so once everything is sketched and cut out, you’ll need to glue them together.

Use the leather string to attach it to your luggage and you are ready for some major adventuring. I feel like Margo has something exciting planned.

DIY Leather Luggage Tag-5

Are you guys ready for today’s giveaway?! They only get better from this point forward FYI.

cricut_giveaway_three

YESSSSS!! A Cricut Explore Air of your very own!!!

All you have to do is watch this video, and then follow this link to answer a question about it!

I thought it would be fun to share some of the other videos that we shot, to answer your burning questions, like What is in my fridge? and hear me talk about Court’s addiction.

You only have 24 hours to enter this giveaway, so hop to it!

Growing up my best friends dad had an upholstery shop in their garage. MAN what I wouldn’t give to be able to go back in time and actually pay attention to what he was doing! On one particular occasion I remember asking why someone would one have an old couch reupholstered (because at that point in my life I couldn’t fathom that someone wouldn’t want something new from RC Willey). His response was “Because they like it so much they would pay for it again.”

For months I hunted for the perfect slouchy retro couch and came up short. I even enlisted the help of a professional furniture hunter (@domfasano he is in Phoenix and always finds the most amazing things!) but pickins were scarce and the reality is that it wasn’t going to be cheap. I was 87% convinced that I was going to have to make a couch. That was a daunting situation given the time frame that I had to turn the living room around in.

That is when I stumbled upon the black couch. I found it on KSL (a online classified in Utah) for $150. It was about 4 hours away but I was headed up north anyway so it wasn’t a big deal to take the truck instead of my car.

I was holding out the best kind of hope that it would be perfection, that not a thing would need to be done to it.

I was wrong.

The black naugahyde was bad. Real bad.

VintageBlackSofa2

But the shape was so great. It was exactly what I wanted.

I hemmed and hawed over what to do and decided that I was not going to find a couch style that I liked more than this one. Buying vintage is awesome, but the fact of the matter is that you are buying something 40+ years old and sometimes it needs a little work done to be able to last another 40.

I called my friend Mark Luke that did the cushions for The Nugget to see if this was a project he wanted to tackle. (Luke’s Custom Upholstery for those in St. George. I cant recommend him enough!!)  He said it would be no problem, and told me how much fabric I would need. A project this size, with as much detail as this couch has (the entire thing is one cushion, the seat cushions are not removable) I knew that it was not something that I would be able to tackle. Simple reupholstery? All day. This? It would have been a freaking disaster.

I kind of went back and forth about using real leather, and vinyl for a little bit. I ultimately decided on real because I am planning on having this thing forever and I want it to get better with age.

Vintage Leather Couch-16

The leather that I ended up with is from Leather Hide Store. It’s a new line that they have called Restorations and the color is Wicker. This leather seems like it is supposed to distress over time. There is a slightly shiny coating on it and when you wrinkle it, it lightens where the folds are.

Leather Hide Store Restorations Leather

This little situation works great in my case because I want it to distress in places that it naturally would. (If you are looking for something that doesn’t distress, they have a really pretty camel that I was also looking at.) We haven’t had to clean it yet, and it’s only lived with us for about a week, but I will keep you guys updated on how it wears!

To celebrate the reuphlstery option, Leather Hide Store is running an exclusive promo for VR readers. If you use the code Restoration10, you will get an additional 10% off their already fantastic prices on the Restoration line. The coupon code is good for 30 days from today (and just a side note, the Restorations line is pretty popular, so shipping may be delayed for a few weeks if it goes into backorder)

Vintage Leather Couch

The last bit of changes we made were the awful legs that were on the poor thing. Back in the early days of Vintage Revivals I would have spray painted, and glazed them :). A few months ago I bought a pair of chairs off of CL. They weren’t anything amazing or specials, but they had really good MCM legs and were so cheap. Fast forward to last week, the legs were the exact height that I needed and because I bought 2 chairs, I had enough for all 5 legs. Love it when that happens!!

Loft Living Room Makeover vintagerevivals.com-33

When I came to grips with the reality that I probably wasn’t going to find my dream couch at the thrift store this time (sad!!) I figured out what I had in the budget for a couch. Court was all over spending more to get something that was comfortable, and that I loved (because he hated the orange couch so much.)

Looking on 1st dibs, and Ebay the reality of the situation was that, even if I could find a couch to buy, it was going to be at least $3k. The Hamilton from West Elm was going to be over $2k. I figured out the total cost for reupholstery, and it came in at just under $1500.00 (including the couch). That still sounds INSANE. $1500 is not nothing, but a dream couch, in real leather was totally worth it! Especially when I was still coming in lower than I was planning on.

I feel like with this couch saga my eyes were opened to what “They like it so much they would buy it again” really meant. If I found this couch online exactly the way that it is now, would I buy it? Not only that, but would I be over the moon excited about it?! That answer is a yes in the most serious Morgan Freeman voice I can muster. (Things always seem to hold so much more weight when he says them, right?!)

Loft Living Room Makeover vintagerevivals.com

Would I do it again? Morgan Freeman Yes. I will totally keep you guys updated on how the leather is wearing once we start breaking it in!

Ahhh the smell of a leather project in the morning. It just does a girl good, am I right?

I have whole heartedly loved getting to know my Cricut Explore. That thing just knocks my socks off every time I get a harebrained project idea.

DIY Leather Notebook vintagerevivals

Do you ever see projects on Pinterest, and on blogs that you LOVE but don’t actually want to do the work involved in creating? Did you know that only a very small percentage of people who consider themselves crafters actually like to come up with the ideas? The vast majority just want to follow the instructions and have it turn out exactly like the picture.

Your creative lives are about to become 79% more simple. Cricut came up with this amazing idea called Make It Now. Basically they have designers (like yours truly) create fool proof projects that you can make with a click. ONE. CLICK. Everything is designed and laid out, all you do is load the materials into your Explore and press Go.

Of course I had to start off my Cricut marriage with Leather. Because leather it is my Spirit Animal.

You do need a Cricut Explore to make these projects,  GREAT news! They just lowered the price from $299 to $249!! So get on it girl!!

First things first, head over a and pick your favorite design (there are just so many cute ones!)

When you click the file it will take you to Design Space. All you have to do is click the little green button at the bottom of the window that says Make It Now.

image

That will open up the files.

Click Purchase and Go. Once you buy the files, they are now yours. So if you want to add your own image to the notebook template you can. Or if you want to make another one of the notebooks that I designed you would just have to purchase the single image that is drawn, not the entire template again!

Cricut Explore Project

Each mat represents a different material. The first mat is the leather cover. The Explore will start by drawing the image

DIY Leather Notebooks-2

Then it will cut the cover out.

Your second mat is a piece of colored cardstock.

The remaining mats are the notebook pages.

Remember when you are taking paper off your mat to peel the mat off of the paper, not the other way around, or you will end up with a curl-fest. (This tip was one of the hacks I talked about here)

DIY Leather Notebooks-2-3

Now it is time to assemble!

DIY Leather Notebooks-1-2

Start by folding your colored cardstock in 1/2 and placing the white pages inside.

DIY Leather Notebooks-2-2

Add the leather cover and make sure your holes are lining up. (If your leather is really stiff you might need to crease it to break the fold. Rolling pins work super good!)

DIY Leather Notebooks-3

Wrap leather cording or masonry line through the holes a few times

DIY Leather Notebooks-4

Then knot it.

DIY Leather Notebooks-5

So simple right?!!

Now, a word about the leather. The stiffer your leather the better the markers will write. I have only had this project go south once and the leather was suede,  super thin and had ZERO structure to it. Couch leather works perfectly,  stiff leather works even better.

Here are just a few of my favorite designs,

You guys!! Today I am back with another hanging geometric himmeli planter! (The tutorial for the first one is here!)  Can you just picture how awesome they will be together?! Phew.

This planter is so simple to make, I pinky promise you can do it!

geometric_hanging_brass_planter

To make this planter you will need:

Brass Tubing (found here)
Pipe Cutter (can be found at Home Depot)
30 Gauge Floral Wire (can be found at Joann’s)
Leather Cord
Small Bowl
Glue Gun

Start by cutting your pipe (this is a little boring so spice things up with some Tim Riggins or something mmmkay?)

You will need:

(3) at 12”
(6) at 6”
(9) at 2”

Geometric Planter Supply List

Start by measuring 2 arms length of wire. Thread 3 of the 6” pieces onto it.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-2

Connect the 2 ends of the wire by twisting them together.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-3

Thread 2 more pieces of pipe onto the wire. Tuck in the little tail from your first triangle, it makes things nice and neat!

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-4

Connect them to one of the triangle elbows (doesn’t matter which one and this point!)  Twist your wire and thread it through the next piece so that it comes out on the tip of your shape.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-6

Add 1 more piece and connect it with the tip on the opposite side.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-7

This will make a 3D triangle.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-8

Now take (2) 12” pieces and thread them onto your wire.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-12

Connect them to one of the triangle corners.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-13

Thread your wire through the pipe to the last corner of the triangle.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter 1 vintagerevivals

Add your last 12” piece, and join the wire at the top.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-16

Now to make the little hanging guy on the bottom.

Take an arm’s length of wire and thread 4 pieces of 2” tubing onto it.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-18

Twist the wire at the ends of the pipe together to make a square.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-19

Add 2 pieces of tube onto your wire (make sure to tuck the tail in!)

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-17

Connect it at the opposite end.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-20

Thread your wire through ONE of the pieces so that it is coming out at one of the disconnected elbows

Add one piece of pipe

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter Tutorial vintagerevivals

Connect the tube to the next corner (horizontally!) and repeat for the other 2 pieces.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-22

Feed the wire back through one piece so that it is coming out of the top and attach it to the bottom triangle point of the large planter piece.

Hanging your leather cording is really simple!

Measure the length that you want and feed one end through the top of the planter.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-23

Fold it over and hot glue the end.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-25

Using a second piece of leather, hot glue the tip underneath the fold that you just made.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-26

Wrap it around the longer piece nice and even.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-27

When you have wrapped it the desired length, trim your leather and hot glue the end down.

Hanging Geometric Brass Planter vintagerevivals.com-28

Tada! You are amazing! Give yourself a giant high five friend!! Plant your favorite succulent or fern inside the bowl and it just rests inside the triangle!

Everyone is in need of a stylish magazine rack, am I right? It doesn’t get more fantastic than this upcycled leather hanging rack that I made for Alicia’s Office Makeover.

Upcycled Leather Magazine Rack vintagerevivals.com

For this project you will need:

Leather (2 pieces that measure 11”x21” each) My favorite place to find leather is from an old couch that needs a new lease on life.

(2) ¾” Grommets (get them at Home Depot in the Tool section! SO MUCH cheaper than at the craft store!)

(1) 24” piece of ½” copper pipe

(2) ½” copper pipe straps

(2) 6’ pieces of rope

Start by folding your leather in half. Mark the holes for your grommets by pressing them into the leather.

Cut the holes using a pair of scissors

Place your grommet. Make sure that it is going through both pieces of leather!

Once your grommets are placed, its time for the fun part!

Take your rope and fold it in ½. Place it over your copper pipe and feed it through the loop that you’ve created. Do this for both pieces.

Feed the ends of your rope through the back of the leather pouch (so that they are coming out of the front.)

Tie a knot and feed the ends back through the grommet.

Pull it nice and tight, and repeat for each of the other grommets.

Hang it on the wall with the copper pipe straps. Step back and admire your handiwork.

The leather has been flowing like wine around these parts for the last few months. Ever since the life changing discovery that you can skin a leather couch and save thousands of dollars (and a puffy leather couch from the landfill for that matter!)  everything is getting leathered. Like a lady addicted to the tanning salon. Except wrinkle free.

Here are of my favorite leather upcycles. They range from the most basic beginner (triangles and hot glue) to “Phew,  I cant believe I pulled that off.” So you are sure to find something that suits the size of your guts.

12 Projects To Make From An Old Leather Couch

First things first. You have to find a couch that needs saving. Watch thrift stores, and Craigslist. Look for real leather,  the worn areas will give you color variation (which is freaking awesome.)

1. This safari sling bench tops my list of favorites. I was totally inspired by this Michael Arnoult chair that I found for $75 on Craigslist. Have a few days? Skin a couch and literally make this bench from scratch.

The good news continues. I just skinned another couch!! The leather obsession LIVES ON! MUAH HA HA HA HA!

I believe massive thank you’s are in order.

Domino magazine just named Vintage Revivals as one of their picks for the 17 Best DIY blogs (stuff like this makes me feel like I am pulling a fast one on somebody. It is just too weird!)  You most definitely will want to pop over and check out the blogs they recommend,  there is some massive talent over there and a few new to me blogs that I cant wait to check out!

I am so excited to finally share today’s room reveal with you guys! When my friends over at P&G and The Home Depot approached me about this project I knew that it would be an experience that I would never forget. Keeping the fun projects in this room under wraps has been really hard,  but now we can be besties without any secrets between us again.

If you remember from the behind the scenes post earlier this week, this was a whirlwind makeover. Like 3 days start to finish. That was a first. Also I just realized that there are probably 5 people that are actually reading this part of the post, everyone else has already scrolled down for pictures. So lets join them, shall we?

This space in my MIL’s house was an extra room that really served no purpose other than a second guest room that was never used. We decided to turn it into an office and make it a really beautiful and functional space.

Here is where it began once we had cleared everything out.

And this is what it looks like now:

Alicia really needed a large linen closet,  what she had was this guy. Womp womp.

(I am pretty freakin sure that the sliding door is one of my favorite projects of all time.)  You can see the full picture tutorial here!

We turned the basic closet into a spot perfect for massive amounts of linen storage. Simply by adding shelves that filled the entire depth. There is just so much room now!

Remember the basic shelves that I made for Macie’s Bedroom?

Well I loved them so much that I couldnt stop myself from doing it to an entire wall in Alicia’s Office.

The wall treatment was another fun Sharpie Wall (you can see the first one here! and the tutorial for this one here) I learned a few new things this time around, so you will want to check that one out!

How in love are you with that desk?! Would you believe that it started out as this rust bucket that may or may not have been living on the side of my house for the last 9 months?

The Yay art was designed by Jamie (but of course) and cut out at the last possible minute by my savior bff Brooke. You can make your own with the tutorial heretutorial here.

These lights were a really simple upcycle from thrifted globe lights. They will cost you less than $10 each!

Lets discuss the cot.

It is just so good. It is from WWII and the frame is in excellent shape. The canvas also appeared to be in great shape until last week when it tore (oopsie). Good thing I have an entire couch that I can skin in my garage….leather upcycle project in the works yo.

I have been saving this vintage topographic map for just the right space. I love the little color moment that it provides.

Can we just talk about the closet door for a minute? There are 3 huge problems that people encounter with sliding barn doors.

1. The hardware is expensive.

Alicia's Office Makeover vintagerevivals.com-41

2. The doors are heavy.

Sliding Barn Door Tutorial vintagerevivals.com

3. Trying to find a door that is the right size is near impossible.

Sliding Door Hardware vintagerevivals.com

I killed all of those problems with this one project. I cant wait to show you my secret! Watch the video below to see how easily it glides,  you will be super impressed.

And it wouldnt be a complete VR room makeover without a bit of upcycled leather in it now would it!? I used some scraps of leather and rope and a little bit of copper pipe to make these hanging magazine/file holders.

If you remember my MIL’s Living Room Makeover and Kitchen Reno, her style is a little on the masculine side and pretty monochromatic. It was a fun challenge to create a space that reflects her taste.

When I think of sprucing up a space for spring the thought of pastels and tulips come to mind….but obviously that is not going to work. To bring a little bit of springy happiness to Alicia’s office I filled it to the brim with plants from Home Depot. It is so inviting and perfect for her.

There is one word to describe just how I feel about the space….

Here is one of the fun videos that we shot:

The others will be posted at the end of the tutorials that they correlate with, so watch for them over the next week or so!

I am not the only one that is updating spaces for spring. Head over to finditathomedepot.com to see so many more!

So what do you think? Do you love it as much as I do? What tutorial are you most excited about?

I has been quite a while since our last theme week on Vintage Revivals (I think Confessions of a Pillow Addict was the last!)  But you guys, all I want to do is make planters. Like, I am turning to a cat lady, but with succulents. Every time I am at Home Depot I find a few little friends that need to come and live at my house. Sooooooo we are celebrating the hoard with Planter Week!! Every day this week a new planter idea is coming to you live!

planter_week

Also? The obsession with leather is not letting up anytime soon. So just be on the lookout for an old couch to skin so that you can play along,  or if it makes your significant other less stabby, you can buy small leather pieces at JoAnn’s or Michael’s.

This project is simple simple and looks effortlessly amazing. Like Elsa’s hair, or Snuffulophogus’s eyelashes, or Nate Berkus’s smile. You know. The kind of cool that the rest of us just cant live up to.

Its fine. Acceptance is the first step. But first, lets make these planters and we are one step ahead of where we were before. (Yay for small steps!)

Hanging-Leather-Sling-Planter-Tutorial-vintagerevivals.com

You will need:

Upcycled Leather Sling Planter DIY vintagerevivals.com

  • Leather
  • Grommets
  • Brass ring (can be found at Joann’s for $.89)
  • Rope (Mine is 3/8” clothesline from Home Depot)
  • Container to hold your plant

Start by cutting out your favorite shape. I made a circle, a triangle and a square and I love them all equally.

Upcycled Leather Sling Planter DIY vintagerevivals.com-2

Mark where you want your grommets to go. I placed the grommet and then sort of spun it back and forth with the heel of my hand to imprint it into the leather.

Upcycled Leather Sling Planter DIY vintagerevivals.com-4

If you have a leather punch rock it all day. If you dont, you are fine. Just use some scissors and be grateful that the wonk will be covered. Perfection is overrated.

Upcycled Leather Sling Planter DIY vintagerevivals.com-5

Place your grommets. (I did use a grommet tool for this, but you can find some that go on with a small tool that you hammer into place.)

Upcycled Leather Sling Planter DIY vintagerevivals.com-7

Upcycled Leather Sling Planter DIY vintagerevivals.com-9

Pull out your ring and rope. Measure your rope twice the length that you want if you are going to double it up (see the finished picture below)

Find the center point of the rope and place it under the ring, then feed the rope through the loop and tighten

Upcycled Leather Sling Planter DIY vintagerevivals.com-12

You will do this for as many grommets as you have placed in your leather.

Tie a knot right above the point that you want your leather to sit. Put on the leather, and tie a knot right underneath it to keep it in place.

Upcycled Leather Sling Planter DIY vintagerevivals.com-14

You can leave your strings hanging straight down, or knot them together like I did.

Hanging Leather Sling Planter Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-4

To make a planter that has a single rope I recommend using a shape that can have an even number of grommets. That way you can knot it on the underside of the leather and loop it through the hanging ring and back down to the other side of the planter. Ya dig?

Hanging Leather Sling Planter Tutorial vintagerevivals.com-3

The actual planters can be big or small, gorg or super ug, and it will still look amazing. The planter that is holding the mint plant is just a basic glass cylinder that was.not.cute. So I made the leather square a lot bigger to hide it. It just so happens to be my favorite one. Its just too much slouchy perfection to handle.

Can you just imaging how cute these would be hanging in a kitchen window or from your favorite sunny corner?

Tomorrow I am turning you all into Macra-Mavens. I promise you guys. Macramé is the way. You’ll want to do it all day. Hey hey hey. Remember sometimes I am a little freak-ay?

And now I am done.

Oh wait, I am NOT done! Round 1 for Creating with the Stars is live and team #ClassyRevivals is in it to win it! So head on over and vote for your favorite project. Voting is anonymous so I cant tell you which one is Mallory and Savannah’s, but I can tell you that I am so beyond obsessed with it I almost dont even know myself. When I saw their final pictures I almost started to cry. It is just so good!! So go and vote for your fave!

Also still not done. Just wanted to let everyone know that I am still in shock over the support for the Target situation. I have a call set up with them this week and I will keep you guys updated! I am really looking forward to talking with them (and a little nervous!)

Ok now I am really done. Remember I love you the most!
