I’m convinced that there is nothing more motivating than the “Holy crap, we’ll never make it” deadline. We started the laundry room makeover mid Dec. and HAD to have it done before the baby came (Jan 5.)  The great thing about making over such a small space is that 1. It’s small! Projects that would take days in a large space can be done in just a few hours! 2. You can do really awesome stuff without worrying about space overwhelment <—Look mom! New word!

Like I mentioned in the Before post, the space is tiny, really nothing more than a hallway with a bump out for a washer and dryer. But it needed to be better. It needed a pep talk Coach Taylor style. (Tim Riggins I’ll always love you!) And it needed to happen now.

Laundry Room Before-2 (2)

Not so great.

So much better!!

VINTAGE REVIVALS Grout -3-2

Laundry Room Makeover  Vintage Revivals-6

The biggest decision that I had to make was the wall and floor tile. Because it was a small space I wanted something show stopping. After hemming and hawing for all of 2 minutes on homedepot.com I decided on matte black penny rounds for the floors. That was an easy decision, but then came the grout. Grout can massively change the entire appearance of your tile, especially if you are installing something simple with no variation like black penny rounds. Even looking at a bunch of different pictures online didn’t help all that much. (They say its gray but it looks white!?) So I did what any good DIYer would do, I tested it. You can see my 5 options and how they each look over on The Apron.

For the wall tile, I went with this modified white subway tile from Merola. The shape is a little more elongated and slim compared to the traditional size and I loveeeee it! I’ll delve deeper into install in the tutorial post but man isn’t it the stuff dreams are made of?!

Laundry Room Makeover White Subway Tile Charcoal Grout Vintage Revivals

I grouted everything with Fusion Pro and it.was.life.changing. If you are embarking on a tile DIY, this is your MVP. It comes premixed (you don’t even have to stir it!) in a rainbow of colors. One thing that throws so many people for a loop when tiling is mixing everything to the right consistency. I know it happens to me! Fusion Pro takes the guess work out. We’ll go into more specifics in the tiling post but this gets 5 gold stars from me!

The countertop was such a simple DIY and I’m loving the waterfall edge! Can you tell we’re still obsessed with stacked plywood over here?

VINTAGE REVIVALS Grout -19

It can be a little hard for me to balance functional + beautiful sometimes but I feel like the cabinet storage is the perfect marriage. It has open shelving for pretty things, and cupboard doors for the not so pretty things that have to live in a laundry room.

Laundry Room Makeover  Vintage Revivals-7

Laundry Room Makeover  Vintage Revivals-25

The other reality that I had to deal with was cupboard doors. In order to make it so that they didn’t swing open into the walk way and hit the garage door/my head every time I walked by I decided that sliding doors would be so much better.

Sliding-Cabinet-Doors-GIF

Simple things like the leather and copper hanging rod rock my world. Its so cute to look at and is completely necessary for a functional laundry room.

Having a countertop to fold things on is a complete game changer. In fact, my laundry couch is getting a little lonesome! Definition: Laundry Couch: The couch in your bedroom that you can never sit on because it holds all of your clean, unfolded laundry.

I cant wait to start sharing the tutorials and things that we learned (the hard way) for this space. But for now, hop over to The Home Depot Blog and check out my tips for picking out grout color and see how 5 different colors look with the black penny tile!

I cant even begin to put into words how much I love this living room makeover. It has been a whirlwind few weeks to get this puppy done, but it was SO worth it!!

I sure hope that you guys have enjoyed this #100reveal series with GE reveal® Lighting and The Home Depot as much as I have! $100 and a little creativity can go a long way!

Lets just have a room refresher shall we?

I love showing these pictures. THIS my friends, is what our house looked like on the MLS listing.

Living Room Before

Awesome right?! I love looking at these pictures, it so perfectly attests to what massive transformations can be in store for your house if you just stop worrying at get started!

This is what the living room looked like 2+ years ago (you can see the room reveal here). I love so many things about it still, but when the orange couch kicked the bucket, I knew that it was time to make a change.

Living Room Makeover @ Vintage Revivals-2-2

This is what the living room looked like when we started this series just a couple of weeks ago:

GE Reveal Light bulb-2

Cue sad trombone.

My inspiration for the space was an industrial-ish loft (because that is all I want in this world and lofts don’t exist in Southern Utah)

This is what it looks like now:

(So many pictures, click through to see them all!)

My fear with leaving the brick raw was that the space would be extremely dark, so adding big light elements (as well as multiple light sources) was critical. The modern dowel art and the light rug make a massive difference.

Loft Living Room Makeover vintagerevivals.com-12

Loft Living Room Makeover vintagerevivals.com-14

This room is pretty long, and the way that it is laid out puts the main area right in the center of the room. There is this left over space that is too small for another seating area but way too big to just do nothing with. I moved the desk from the wall next to the window to right smack dab in the middle of them and I am diggin it!

The copper plant shelves in the entryway are just to die for. Can you believe that I got every single one of those plants from The Home Depot!?

Loft Living Room Makeover vintagerevivals.com-24

We all love beautiful spaces, but one thing that was absolutely necessary for the entryway was complete functionality. The plexiglass calendar is so critical to our lives and hello about those cute wall pockets.

Obviously these letters are for pics, but I just have to announce that the 2nd one is addressed to a Mr. Tim Riggins because of course.

One of my favorite elements in the room are the family pictures . I love that they are so us, and not just giant smiling face portraits.

Can we just talk about the couch for a second? I am 1000% sure that it turned out even better than I could have ever imagined. This is the actual couch of my dreams.

Do you remember what it looked like before with that horrible vinyl?

I LOVE this room. It turned out exactly like I was hoping. Doesn’t it feel so loft-like?!

Loft Living Room Makeover vintagerevivals.com

Creating a whole new room is so fun, but before you start tearing stuff apart, first try switching out your light bulbs. Check out the difference between regular bulbs and GE reveal® light bulbs.

GE Reveal Before and After

Loft Living Room Makeover Before and After vintagerevivals.com-2

Loft Living Room Makeover Before and After vintagerevivals.com

I am telling you guys, using reveal light bulbs are like instant Photoshop for your house. Without the reveal® bulbs there is not a chance I would take a picture in the dead of night and post it on the blog. But seriously, look at how good it looks! Reveal® bulbs make things look the way that they are meant to. Whites are white (and not dingy yellow) colors pop and patterns and textures are more pronounced.

I didn’t want this last video to get lost in the pictures, so I am posting it down here too. Court is SUCH a sport. I don’t know why he goes along with these hair-brained schemes but man am I glad he does!!

You can see all of the projects from this series here! There are SO many projects still to post, watch for the sources post next!

We have one more giveaway for (10) $100 Home Depot gift cards and GE reveal LED light bulb kits! All you have to do is comment below! No qualifier, just a comment!

Are you ready to finally see the inside? It was the craziest thing, for months The Nugs was parked between the side of the house and our block wall with just a teeny bit of squeeze room to get inside. After all of the changes that we made inside (like taking out the top bunk, and cupboard) it felt so much bigger! Then, when we pulled it out so that I could paint, and the first thing that I thought was “Holy crap this thing is WAY smaller than I remember!” I guess a shift in perspective will do that to you.

This is what it looked like before? In a word. Dark.

Can we just talk about the art for a second? If you are a diehard VR reader you might remember the giant bike painting that I have hanging in my entryway (posted way back in 2011 so be kind when you click that link!). I have been DYING to get a painting of Wallace and Gertie Girl done and of course had to reach back out to my friend Jonathan. You guys. This painting is an EXACT freaking duplication of their adorable faces. And the crazy part is that he does everything with spray paint. I know. He is the coolest person on the planet. So if you want more info, check out his site here.

The rest of the art are prints that will be selling in the soon to be opened Vintage Revivals Shop! I preach that art doesn’t have to be expensive and so I am putting my money where my mouth is!

I need to give the most massive thank you in all the world to The Home Depot for not only sponsoring this project, but for the FREAKING AMAZING employees at my local store who always wanted status updates and were so willing to listen and troubleshoot all of the strange requests that came up over the course of this project. They always have kind words and encouragement to share, and never judge me when I am rockin a 4 day ponytail. Those are the kind of friends that you want right? MUAH!

I just have so many feeeeeelings about The Nugget and the process that this entire thing has been. Don’t mind me as I wax thoughtful for a minute mkay?

This has hands down been the hardest project that I have ever done. There were so many new skills that we had to learn and so many projects that went awry, at times it was almost too much to handle. I don’t consider myself someone who knows everything about DIY and design but there were moments that I felt like a complete amateur. Like every choice I made was wrong (because it was!)  When I am working on room projects I like to get things done really fast, while the excitement and inspiration is fresh in my mind. Over the course of the last 4+ months I have learned patience and that its ok to start over.

The crazy thing is that originally, I had talked with Home Depot about having it done in mid July for a cross country trek to Atlanta. Thank goodness that was nixed. Then I had planned on having it finished in mid September. That is when I had my meltdown. But now. Mid November it is finally done. The absolutely insane thing is that it would have looked completely different if I had finished it in July or September. Circumstances and little moments of inspiration adjusted my viewpoint and design and I am THRILLED with how it all turned out. In fact (Court cover your ears) I kind of would love to do another one. Now that I know a little more about the process. It might be a little like child birth. It is so fun and exciting when you find out you are expecting, you spend so much time getting things ready,  at the end of the pregnancy you can.not wait to get it over with,  birth is freaking painful,  but then you have this adorable little baby trailer and you kind of forget about all of the crappy parts.

So is The Nugget everything I pictured? Yes and No. No, because it isn’t where I thought that the design would end up, but that detail is completely trumped by the fact that is in fact a 1000x better that I thought it would be! I am SO proud of how this little guy turned out. It is hands down the coolest project we’ve ever done.

I don’t sing his praises nearly enough, but I have THE BEST husband on the planet. Court is so patient and hard working and rarely complains…even when I tell him the new tile has to come out. He is absolutely my better half and I could do none of this without him. Love you Court! So um…wanna have another baby trailer?

Lastly (I feel like this is turning into a speech to the Academy) I want to thank you guys for sticking with me through this entire series, and for giving me tough love when I needed it and huge bursts of encouragement when I was struggling. You are the absolute best readers and I am SO lucky to have you!

You guys! Did you have the best 4th? I hope it was wonderful!!

I have made a few lifelong friends through this little blogging world and my girl Jill tops the list. She was my partner in shame when all humiliation broke loose on national television (ahem, Craft Wars). We have spend a few weeks together and I can always count on THE BEST stories being shared and never running out of things to talk about. I truly love her.

Mandi and Jilly on Craft Wars

Jill has been completely overhauling the bathroom in her basement. I think we can all sympathize when a project that should (in our minds) take a few weeks, then turns into something much much more life sucking. Like 2 years later life sucking.

Here is what Jill’s bathroom looked like before she got started:

Not so awesome. Dark, dingy, (and in Jill’s mind) completely unacceptable.

So she did what any slightly sane hardcore DIYer would do. She completely transformed it into her dream bathroom.

It is amazing right?!! Like any good DIYer, she shared the good, the bad, and the ugly on her blog. You will most definitely want to head over and read all about the shenanigans. You can see the full reveal here (tons of great info in that post!)  While you are there give her a huge high five for seeing this thing through!

I am dying to know what your favorite part is. I think the countertops and the shower are to die for. The mirrors are just sooo good too. And the floors, love them. The whole thing is just perfection,  amazing job Jilly!!

It’s HERE!! Today is the day that I FINALLY get to show off Macie’s bedroom overhaul! I am not good at keeping things secret and this doozie has been eating at me for months. The special occasion for a room makeover celebration? Well Sherwin-Williams National Painting Week of course! Last year I was assigned the color Pink and created Dylan’s Dream Room for my 4 year old daughter. This year my color was Green and I am pretty obsessed with how it turned out.

Last week I introduced you to my niece Macie. In short she is fantastic. Her bedroom? Um….welp, let’s just let the pictures speak for themselves.

DSC_0312

Macie Before 2

Macie Before 3

What we have here is a room that has been transformed multiple times over the years. From an office, to a bedroom that all 4 of her younger siblings have enjoyed (hence the sharpie on the wall and the sticker residue on the door), to finally a room of her own.

Mace is a great kid and deserves this space to be wonderful.

Here is how it looks now (pssst! isn’t Buster the fluffiest pup you’ve ever seen?)

So much better right!?

When I create a space I start with the feeling that I want to evoke when you walk into the room. The feeling that I repeatedly came back to for Macie’s room was Freedom. Close your eyes. Wait that wont work. Ok, keep your eyes open, but picture a sun-kissed girl at the beach,  she jumps into the back of an old army jeep and rides down a scenic two lane road laughing with her friends as the wind whips her hair around her face. Full of carefree light and the world at her fingertips. That kind of freedom.

The visual picture that I had in my mind while I was dreaming about this space was one that most of us have actually gone through. That moment when you are still at home, living with your parents, in a room that they originally decorated. Your thirst for new experiences and new thoughts, and finding out what makes you happy is something that pushes you unexplainably forward.

If you notice, the bones of the room have a very iconic 50’s vibe. The two tone doors, and the gold wood slice wall, even the blush nightstands, are polished and refined. Then like a wild flower in the middle of a manicured garden, all of the free spirited boho breathes life into it. I feel like this room visually describes what a teenager whose spirit cannot be contained feels like. It feels like a place where you can have the courage to hear your own voice. It feels like freedom.

Gold Removeable Wallpaper vintagerevivals.com

Granted my teenage life was not that poetic, it consisted of expressing myself by singing NSYNC at the top of my lungs and skipping Spanish, but I mean, sort of the same thing…right?

We faced 3 main design culprits in the space.

1. The darkness. It was dark ya’ll. (Can I say ya’ll if I am from Utah?)  The taupe walls were not doing it any favors in that department. I painted the walls with my favorite white (Sherwin-Williams Ultra White Base with 4 oz of white pigment added for coverage.)

Simple and Inexpensive Shelves vintagerevivals.com

Dilemma #2. The carpet. Macie’s carpet is not bad. It is just a little harder to design around than a bare floor. Ripping the carpet out was a no-go and when you cant change something, the next best thing is avoidance right? So to immediately take your eyes off of the floor, I painted the ceiling with Sherwin-Williams Emerald in Secret Garden. It makes the ceiling look SO tall (it is 9 feet, so tall but not monstrous) and it is hands down my favorite dark olive green. So moody and perfect. I also put a really great rug down that I found for $99 on Rugs USA.

Can we just pause for a moment to kiss the macramé headboard on the mouth? It is everything that I dreamed of and totally doable. I wanted the macramé to be the star, but it needed a little bit of support to pull of such an amazing feat.

Mace needed a spot to get ready in the mornings. I hunted for days (which is a lot like months when you have 8 days to pull a room makeover together.)  Finally I found an old metal desk that had received a not-mandilicious paint job (I will show you soon). It got a quick overhaul with white and copper spray paint, and fit perfectly in the spot that it needed to live in.

Every room needs an amazing accent wall (can I get an amen?!)

Macie’s room was no exception. Guess what this wall treatment is made out of?

Hanging Lights Gold Wall Treatment Leather Sling Bench vintagerevivals.com

Wallpaper? Nope.

A stencil? Nada.

Painted by hand? Puleeze.

A custom stamp that I made with my Cricut Explore? Ding Ding Ding!

The gold metallic is metallic. It has so much shine that I had a really hard time capturing it without blowing out my picture.

Macie's Bedroom Makeover-16-2

The Tea Leaves art was inspired by my Gossip Girl binge in December. It is just so romantic. Chuck + Blair forever. I asked Jamie to design something and she came up with this beautiful piece. That girl is a genius.

The hanging lights are such a fun way to add a little bit of simple excitement to the corner. The DIY is really easy too. It is almost entirely made up from materials that can be sourced locally!

And of course we have to talk about the leather sling bench that was made from an upcycled leather sofa. It is just so good in here and solves our 3rd design dilemma. Having a place for friends to hang out. (Can you see the sheen from the gold paint?)

This is the best day of the whole summer, right here, right now.

2 months, 6 trips, and 100’s of life stories later,  my girl Cara has a brand new makeup oasis.  Today is the day that you FINALLY get to see it!

I love working with other people and their design parameters.  In my house I can experiment to my hearts content, but when you are designing for someone else, they have all their own ideas that you get to work with (that is one reason that Dyl’s room turned out so fantastic!)

When I asked Cara what she wanted her room to feel she immediately answered with welcoming, calm, creative and glamorous. (she obvs thought about it long and hard.)  Creating a space based on feelings is my favorite.  Because so many of her readers come over for makeovers, Cara wanted the room to be a destination,  somewhere totally special and beautiful.

Here is what it looked like before.  It was totally not functional for what Cara needed it for.  Imagine trying to shoot beauty videos in a dark,  mustard-y beige cavern.  There is a fantastic chance that you will look like you are in liver failure.

Liver failure…that is what we started with.

This is what I turned it into:

Blue Velvet Settee Maskcara Office Makeover vintagerevivals.com

One of the big hurdles in this space is that Cara rents (as do so many of you).  Now before you go all Hildy on a room make sure that your landlord is ok with it.  Rental agreements are different everywhere.  That being said.  We all know what it feels like to not love a room.  You know where you make excuses when people see it, or in Cara’s case, it is just not functional for what you need?  Why not make it amazing and then when it comes time to move out, spend a few days putting it back the way you found it?

People are freaked out about patching small holes, when in all reality it is not a big deal at all.  My advice when you are working in a rental is to make sure that everything you do is reversible.  Take our wall treatment for example.  It was painted beforehand and not caulked.  Each board has 2 tiny finishing nails in it, and can be pulled off the wall without damage.  Spend a few hours filling holes and its like it never happened.

The art was inspired by a piece that I spotted in HGTV Magazine (they are my fave).

Color Wheel Art vintagerevivals.com

The amazing antique velvet settee is the stuff that dreams are made of.  Literally.  The blue velvet is in perfect condition, and it is trimmed out with pale lilac.  Who does that?  My guardian angel,  that’s who.

More than a beautiful room, Cara needed a space that was functional.  I am talking major storage and somewhere that she could actually work her beauty making magic on.  So transforming this idea I created a custom shelving unit that rocks the industrial glam hard.   I cant wait to tell you all about the stool…his name is Miracle (for reals) and he has a little secret under his pretty white coat.

The ginormous ceiling fan HAD to go.  In its place is an antique crystal art deco chandelier.   Because the room is on the small side we were able to swag the light over the table and not worry too much about light displacement.  That my friends is called a win win win.  Also this is the part where I stop talking, because I know you just want to look at pretty pictures anyways…

So good right?!

As amazing as this room is though, the best part was finding a bestie for life.  Miss Cara I love you!

Next week begins the whirlwind of sources, step by step tutorials, and behind the scenes mishaps that went into creating this space from the ground up.

Ok now.  Lets be honest.  Dont you want to take a little bit of this room home?

EEEK! I want you to be able to take a little bit of this room home too!

I am doing something that I have never done before.  I am giving away MaskCara’s Office in a Box to one lucky reader.  It is a box chock full of treasures to create your own industrial glam oasis.  Complete with pillows, rugs, art, and tchotchkes galore.  I am going to be sneak previewing all of the goodies on Facebook and Instagram throughout the weekend, so make sure that you are following Vintage Revivals in both places!  On Monday the giveaway post goes live!  So make sure that you come back then!

And just for fun,  lets look at the before and after again…

This post brought to you by TIKI Brand®. All opinions are 100% mine.

Sigh, its summer friends. Ivie is out of school today. Which means in exactly 9.5 days I am going to be ready for a vacation. Somewhere new and fun. Last year Court and I went to Paris and it was indescribable. This year? We are going on vacation to our backyard (yay?).

One day, many moons from now I am going to have a backyard with huge trees,  secret huts, and hidden swings. (And that is just for me.) But until that day comes, I am going to rock what I got in the miniscule backyard that we have.

Also I think I might need to move out of the desert. Just a thought.

If I could describe my dream backyard in 3 words it would be lush, funky, and colorful.

backyard

So operation No Ugly Backyard is underway.

And that starts with a Tiki Torch. Or a TIKI Brand Fire Sculptures to be exact.

Tiki Alumina Fire Sculpture

My parents never had cool stuff like this when I was a kid. I mean. An open flame and me? NEVER a good idea.

But when Tiki sent me their Alumina Fire Sculpture I was super excited about it, open flame and all. I really loved the modern style and just based on the size of the box, this thing is MUCH taller than I expected. One thing that was missing (and you can’t blame them, you just cant bottle this stuff) is a little Mandifying,  you know, to up the funk factor.

Colorful Modern Outdoor Seating Area

I used my Silhouette to cut out simple triangle chains out of white vinyl, (you can download my file for free here) and then I just slapped it on the torch base. I LOVE it. Like if it wasn’t an open flame that has mosquito repellant built right in (its amazing, those Tiki guys think of everything) I would totally have this in my bedroom. (If you are loving triangles too, check out Ivie’s tribal triangle wall. Its pretty fantastic!)

untitled-4

So now lets chat about the flame.

Tiki Fire Sculpture Flame

Dylan stood by and watched it for a good 20 minutes. This was our convo:

D:  Mom its SOOOOO pretty!

Me: I know honey, but we don’t touch it.

D: I know, its just so sparkly!

Me:  It is so sparkly, but it will burn you if you touch it.

D:  I know Mom. I just love it.

Me:  I am so glad, I love it too. But we don’t…

D:  Maw-yum (you have to say that phonetically to get the true dialect)  I know. We don’t touch it.

Me:  Right.

I even secretly recorded a Vine video of it for you. (you have to click the volume control in the upper left hand of the video to hear it!)

That girl will be the death of me.

Outdoor Seating Area

So if you are in the mood the set the mood for your backyard, pop on over to The Home Depot and pick up your own. This particular style retails for $69.00

Now for the rest of the styling. The rug was $24.99 from HomeGoods,  I have been itching for a rag rug since Kelsey’s Room Makeover last year and loved the rainbows on this one. The FREAKING awesome chair,  plant shelf and Tiki mask are thrift store scores! Pillow is clearance Homegoods from 9 months ago (does that qualify it as vintage?)  And I have tutorials coming next week for the sign and the concrete succulent holders!!

Colorful Modern Outdoor Seating Area

Also did you notice my collection of houseplants is growing!! Don’t you love that succulent bush that looks like a ball?! It was love at first sight. It would make an awesome bouquet if you wanted to get married to a Tiki mask.

ps. Channel your inner pyro decorista and check out TIKI Brand on Facebook for lots of fun ways to style your patio!

pps. Wallace? Cutest puppy ever.

We have all seen on HGTV those amazing kitchen renovations where it literally doesnt look like the same house. Then we sigh that it will probably never be a part of our reality. Well, luckily for me, I was able to see/help design a transformation of this magnitude over at my in-laws. Yesterday I showed off the living room before and after, and as astounding as that is, the kitchen is literally to die for.

This is what it looked like before. My MIL pretty much despised it from the day they moved in. It was plagued with the worst that the early 90’s had to offer. Oak Cabinetry, drop down ceiling, florescent lights, off white Formica countertops. It felt teeny and crowded and drove her crazy.

005

007

Working through the design we decided that the first things that had to go were the wall separating the kitchen and the living room, the peninsula, and that freaking drop down ceiling.

So the men got to work demoing, removing cabinets, and other manly things.

013

And since this isnt that type of blog there wont be any tutorials on how to remove a wall. So sorry folks, but I am not an expert at that.

Anyone with a pinterest account knows that white cabinetry and subway tile are all the rage,  but sometimes it can just be so white. To balance the whiteness we used dark gray countertops (Concrete by Caeserstone) and dark grout in the tile.

We painted the wall at the far end of the kitchen with Sherwin Williams Iron Ore to tie it into the living room, and to tone down the white a little.

Before the reno this living room was never used (there is a TV room that is off the entry that we used WAY more) but now this gorgeous area is the center of the home.

When I say this post has been a long time in the making that is an understatement. The type of understatement that would be along the lines of saying that Thin Mints are just a good cookie.

I have to say that I am pretty much the luckiest girl in the world when it comes to my in-laws. This blog would literally not be in existence without the encouragement and listening ear of my wonderful Mother In Law (you have met her briefly in this staging video). She has got fantastic taste and loves all things thrifted as much as I do. Its sort of like having a best friend that you trade clothes and makeup with, except we trade furniture.

Every summer when school is out, Court is enlisted in a big summer project. After years of talking about all of the things that we wanted to do to her kitchen/living room it finally came to fruition last July.

This is what her living room looked like before (I seem to have lost some of my pictures in the great computer crash of 2012, so you will have to work with what I got.)

This is a shot looking at the kitchen (its on the other side of that pass through window)

And here is a shot looking into the living room from the kitchen

And this is what it looks like now…

…from the same point of view.

Yes my friends we took out a wall, and I cant wait to show you the kitchen tomorrow!! But lets chat all things living room today.

While my MIL is thriftier than most she doesn’t take it to the same extreme that I do.

The first thing they did after taking out the wall was put in engineered hardwood. Isn’t it so beautiful?

The walls got coat of paint (the dark color is Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams and the same color that I used in the $150 room makeover)

As I have been chatting about the last week or so, I have been working on a really fun segment for Studio 5 called “What Would Mandi Do?” where viewers submitted pieces that have them stumped. I needed a local girl who was ready and willing to let me do what needed to be done to make her piece of furniture out of this world amazing.

Sierra sent me an email that explained that she found an old fireplace mantle at an antique store and was IMMEDIATLEY in love with it. After talking to the shop owner about it and then relaying the info to her Grandpa she found out that the mantle came from an old house in Washington UT that was midwife headquarters. And it gets better. It was the house that her Grandpa himself was born in 80 years ago. How cool is that?! Rarely do we actually know the full story behind a great find.

Mantle Headboard Update @ Vintage Revivals-83

So she bought it. And it sat in her garage. For 2 years. (don’t judge her, you know you can relate!)  The problem? She had no idea what to do with it.

Because it was such a special piece, it needed more than just an update. It needed an entire room designed around it. I decided that we were going to turn it into a headboard for her beige box guest room.

Mantle Headboard Update @ Vintage Revivals-81

First things first the beige just HAD to go. Sierra’s house is very neutral, and if I am going to push someone I am going to PUSH them.

(ps. This is what pushing looks like)

DSC_0039

(This picture is coat 1 while it was still wet so its a little lighter and splotchier than the final coat.)

The color that I used was a custom mix called Modified Envy. Here is the mixture formula:

Perfect Emerald Green Paint Formula

Originally when I ordered my paint at my local Sherwin Williams store the color I ordered was Envy. Its a really bright true Kelly green. When I stopped in to pick it up, though I LOVED the vibrancy of it,  it needed to be a little bit deeper. As I was explaining what I wanted to the guys they were doing what can only be described as color math. And let me tell you,  they are GENIUSES at color math. They magically deepened it without losing the vibrancy that I was so in love with. THAT is why I shop there, those guys are freaking experts. I was also feeling a little concerned about painting in Sierra’s house because she is currently with child. Instead of using my fave Super Paint,  I used their new line called Emerald (fitting right?!)  Emerald is THE BEST technology paint has to offer. It is a Zero VOC formula (even after the colorants are added) which basically means that the airborne toxins that can be found in paint are gone. Hooray for Sierra’s fetus! The washability is FANTASTIC and it has a lifetime warranty. Totally worth it.

Working on this project I immediately came up with a few ideas for the mantle (a few of which I tried and then changed my mind about, but that is another post for next week.)  After working though the ideas I realized that what I was missing out on was a main element that was wood. Everything was just feeling so painted.

I love that this room has all of my favorite things. Color, brass, wood, faux bois, a quirky animal,  a hand drawn element, old books, and killer art.

Isn’t it so exciting?!

The mantle is totally updated, the green is so vibrant, and all of the thrift store elements make my heart sing!!

The mirror above the bed is from Target (I am dying over their new Threshold collection, its SO good)  All of the decorative books and junk are from my local thrift store. The faux bois pillow and lamp are from Homegoods (naturally). The mustardy chartreuse pillows are simple envelope pillows with fabric from Joann’s.

The vintage inspired plumes print ties all of the colors from the room together in one pretty package. Instead of putting it in a frame, I hung it poster style with command strips. I found it at a local store called Urban Renewal for $9.00.

I love that the headboard is so happily highlighted in this room with the green wall and accent colors.
